To throw a small curve what is the effect of 500 CC smaller motor on this discussion.

I have 1jz, and am in the agonizing process of deciding on my snail.

I have made these flow maps using garrett flow maps and superposing estimated flow for 1jz engine along several rpm's

rpm go from 1000-8000 with the blue line rep 7500 rpm

Would the GT3582R AKA the GT35/40R spool decently and still make the power ?

Looking back at my old posts are always entertaining...the difference between now and then is a little something called "Maximum Boost by Corky Bell".

Now I know all the math, did the calculations, and for conservative power and incredible spool, the GT35R is the best turbo bar none. At 18 psi, it is pretty much at peak efficientcy. I posted the exact map for our 7M application somewhere on SM already...let me see if I can find it again.

Here it is:

I know for a fact I'll be purchasing this turbo for my car and putting it on eventually. Next year I'm rebuilding my engine which will take massive funds and the year after I'll have college. I'm building my engine for this specific turbo and everything around it.

My Findings!

Finished the R&D on the GT3540/GT35R/GT3582!

In my application it's a great turbo to 25 psi after that it just can't meet the CFM demands of a 3.0Litre motor turning 7700+ rpm and really drops off at the top end.

Pushing it to 30 psi see's only 20 kw/27 rwhp more than 22 psi as it's so far off the island by this stage!

Expanding on Orion's graph we get >>

Bottom line is 18 psi top line is where I went as I said in hindsight I shouldn't have done it! ;)
(I lost a HG on this run)

Corrected power was 536rwhp.

im looking for a turbo right now also because i want to do a build over the summer. im looking at garretts website and reading about the GT35R, but i dont really know how to read the flow charts. could someone explain how? I want to decide on a turbo before the summer.

536 was the max but my situation is a little different running LPG is always going to be lower HP per PSI due to the nature of the fuel.

I run an EBC as it helps boost come on earlier.

ok cool thx IJ, i knew for a while there you were running just the WG. Wow 536! I want to be right around 500 (I just bought this turbo on Monday with the .82). Hopefully I can get somewhere close!

Jake: Exactly!

My Intake temps weren't bad even at 30psi but it's just not worth the effort.

At 25psi it kept making power all the way to 7700 redline at 30psi it flattened out at 5500 then started to drop off the harder it revved as the Turbo just couldn't pump enough to keep up!

Trying to push that sort of power on the 35R is obviously crazy :icon_razz

But it depends exactly what your goals are and where your power will be needed. More important to me is boost responce; actually more important that actual power is how much whiplash I get from a dig. After that its fairly obvious a 40R is definetly what you need towards those power goals

Orion: It's the most responsive car I've ever driven!

(Hey I would always have wondered if it would go to 30 if I hadn't pushed it and now I know where it stops making power I'll dial it in to that and the new HG is 2mm this time so static comp is up from 7.7:1 to 8.26:1 so off boost response can only be better)

LAG not here ;)

I love the way the 1.06 turbine makes it's power anything tighter and it would just fry the rears everytime you touched the throttle!

Jake: LOL nah pass 500 in a daily driver is plenty as it is it lights the rears at 4000 in the first 3 gears!

I bet money that his responsive 500whp would take out any 700+whp 7m. :)

....on the street.
