My key for my 88 worked in my friends 87. Nobody's key but mine works in my 91. :) And yes, the keys and locks were redesigned for the 89+ models.

Once i start my car i can pull the key straight out of the ignition with it still in 'run' and the car stays running like the key is still there, its kind of annoying.

LOL. I thought I was the only one with that problem!

lol - this isn't limited to Toyota cars, by any stretch. By now I've got enough Toyota keys I can probably get into and start anything made prior to '90. I'm not worried about deleting this thread, either, it's not possible to censor something that is such common knowledge.

My 83 Celica key unlocked and started every other Celica I tried it in.

My brother used the Celica's key to unlock and start a Jetta that double parked him. True story.

Fortunately my Supra has newer lock cylinders.

thanks for clearing up the wrong information that i was told

It's a common enough misunderstanding. People think "hey, I've been able to open two of the 12 MKIII's at this meet. There must be only 6 different keys." Well, it doesn't matter how good of shape the key is in it has as much to do with how rounded the tops of the wafers in the cylinder are how filed out the opening in each wafer is. A worn out key makes it even easier.

Also, as for universal/master keys (I say universal because in the auto world the "Master" is actually the primary key, not a key for ALL the cars as it is elsewhere.) Wafer locks really just aren't set up for it. There are some tricks to do it, but they make the lock a whole lot easier to get into and I've never seen a lock like that that wasn't modified that way until AFTER it left the factory.

threads like this should be deleted, we all know this but is it really something we want everybody that happens to wander on this site to know?

does not really matter when it has been posted in countless other toyota forums (4Runner, Celicas, MR2 etc). In the end. It is irrelevant.

I think my keyhole and key where replaced because it doesn't say toyota anywhere on it, just "Made in the USA" on a black rubber grip. but oddly enough it open the doors as well but not the hatch

I noticed the same yesterday on my dads mkiii. The replacement key opens the doors fine and starts the car but it wont open the hatch. I got the original and it opened fine.

The whole worn out key/worn out lock thing is indeed posted all over... doesn't mean it's not a bad idea to not advertise it further though.

Personally, I think people should try to tighten their lips with regard to disabling the stock alarm system.

That's because nobody ever uses the key in the hatch, so the lock cylinder will still be mint in there. Same with the passenger side door.

valet key? it probably won't open the glove box either if it is the valet
What's a valet key? I thought it was just a spare...

So shouldn't open just fine with the key since it's mint? The key slides in, it just wont turn. The orginal has no problems opening it. :icon_conf

A valet key is a key which is provided that will only permit someone enough access to operate the vehicle. In most cases it will operate the driver's side door and the ignition.... if it allows access to anything else it's usually only the passenger door. This way you can lock valuables in the trunk or glove box and who ever has you vehicle in your absence cannot get in there.

There are additional cuts made to valet keys to facilitate this. I've never heard of a case where the valet key was made without certain cuts.. the reason being is that a knowledgeable person could file away the designated spot and presto, they now have a master.

You need to understand how wafer locks work to understand this. It's plenty possible for one key to work but no others. But generally, yes a key that's NEW and cut precisely to the right code should open the lock whether the lock's worn or not. The lock may have been replaced and the wear in the lock is the reason the other key will operate it or the keys cuts could be offset... there are several possibilities.

GOOD NEWS! I had my old worn key copied today, and the new key does NOT pull out when in the ignition and turned on.

Never thought of that. Just assumed I would have to replace the lock. lol I think I'll try that.
