My key for my 88 worked in my friends 87. Nobody's key but mine works in my 91. And yes, the keys and locks were redesigned for the 89+ models.

Spanish Surprise;1105502 said:I noticed the same yesterday on my dads mkiii. The replacement key opens the doors fine and starts the car but it wont open the hatch. I got the original and it opened fine.
That's because nobody ever uses the key in the hatch, so the lock cylinder will still be mint in there. Same with the passenger side door.Spanish Surprise;1105502 said:I noticed the same yesterday on my dads mkiii. The replacement key opens the doors fine and starts the car but it wont open the hatch. What's a valet key? I thought it was just a spare...noah89t;1105505 said:valet key? it probably won't open the glove box either if it is the valet
So shouldn't open just fine with the key since it's mint? The key slides in, it just wont turn. The orginal has no problems opening it. :icon_confGrimJack;1105567 said:That's because nobody ever uses the key in the hatch, so the lock cylinder will still be mint in there.
