I started the rebuilding process again.

I went to advance, and o'reilly to find a dial caliper- the associates didnt have a clue what it was.

One said "is that a new style of calipers/brakes?- what kinda car is that on?"

lol- naw doood. its a measuring instrument. it has a round gauge.

then he walked me to the autometer gauge section. OK?

I didnt wanna seem like a jerk- so I asked if I can see the catalog. He said "ya must be the only builder in town. watcha buildin?"
a supra.
he goes- "i have a srt/4 neon that makes 600hp. I'll make the 1/4 in 8 secs"
WTF? and then he became a royal PITA too!
*********************************
Lesson Learned- ya gotta ignore the idiots. ya losin precious rebuild time!
*********************************
well... (what I should done in the 1st place) I called my uncle, and asked if he knew where I can buy one. He said "jus come over N pik it up suun" My unc's just plain cool!

SO- off to the rebuild

I print the specs from the tsrm and head out to the car.
I check for thrust clearances on all the rods and crank.
ALL BEAUTIFUL!!!!! yea!

Then I uncap the #1 rod only to find-
That motor is barely broke in.

a very clean rodcap. the bearings still had some of the white paint too.
woohoooo! :)
still, i need to know the oil clearances-
[edit] (this is how NOT to do plastigauge!)[/edit]
So i clean up the bearing and cap and laid a piece of green plastigauge.

The clearances were on the tight side.
[-edit] (be sure that the plastigauge is between the bearing & crank next time!)[/edit]

well- it was time to torque it down again. Cleaned off the plastigauge and started step torquing.
I take my time so it seats well. 10pds, 20pds, 30pds. one of the bolts felt funny. Then goin for 40-
...... POP!

oh sh*t! freekin out again-

the rod bolts were stock- not arps!

FYI- Toyota bolts really do STRETCH! thats why you dont re-use em for the rebuild!

well- i had to remove the bolt from the rod. hmmm. darn things on there tight!
SO- i screw in the sparkplugs and tapped away at it.- finally got it.
for the good side, i put the nut back on so it was level with the top of the bolt- then tapped it out easily.

now i wait for ARP rodbolts.

I just decided to go with an Ebay scraper. made sure they knew it was a 7mgte w/ a 6m crank too.
Since its the metal one, I may have to file it some to fit

I found out IJ's teflon scraper was made special order by the guys at IshiHara-Johnson

All I know is that Kevin Johnson (the person who sells it) also makes them as its ordered.
Admittedly- I never put together "Johnson" with that brand name till just now.

Another update:- imma thinkin about buying some solid forged steel, or aluminum stock at the Goldin Metal Supply (in MS) and fabbing my own solids.

Goldin will cut it to exact length for me, no charge! :evil2:
(3.7"L x 2"W for round mounts?)

all I do is fire up the drill press back home.

I'll keep ya posted. And if it works, I'll prolly be able HOOK a supramaniac up!

Lesson learned:
(fourtchun kooky saaa.)
Peace begins with a Smile
-yes!
I musta ate 50 pieces!
--------------------

Psssst! Chirp!
It was time for: MISSION IMPOSSIBLE

Next I went to Goldin Metal Supply
Doood. Big ole warehouse lotta space
finally found da office-
:nono:
They had no aluminum or forged 2" round stock.
buzz- they would'nt cut it for me neither.
20ft was $120

The motor mount issue was getting to me-
aint go out it like this.

heh- slow down a lil bit.

I got my Pocket PC. lemme use yellowpages.com a bit.
we pull over-now my wife is the piLot. ready to go..atta girl

so, 1/2 a mile down the road....
ISCO Metals & Supplies. hmm....
Bam!
Nice lady there too! (My superagent skill must be warmin up...)
They had mad stock steels-Lovely diamond plate.
ahh- fabrication heaven

oh well...
I Purchased 2" solid round stock for $50. AND got 10 foot of it!
So, I (tried) to load it in the van- UHUH! too long!
they cut it in half, no problem.
thats more like it- keep goin.

Still 2pm, so...
I drive like a manic Fred Flintstone at rush hour, made it back to the hill ASAP.
Gotta unbolt the top half of the mount (drivers side)

heres where the tear was in the mount

FYI- here it is unbroken

time ta zip!
over to my uncles house and use the shop.
Removed the bolt

I had to cut the stock to length.
My uncle pulled out a mechanical hacksaw from the 30's! It was original equipment from an oldskewl machine shop. Unc had'nt used it in 15 years.

We rigged a ½ HP motor to it, attached a vbelt.
Ahh- it ran. So I screwed it all down to the workbench.
It was in need of some serious oil. So I oiled it. :icon_neut

It held the 5 foot of stock very tightly. We set the blade- then turned it on.
After 1 hour and 8 minutes, and good ole talk.
-it finally cut through that metal stock.
(I should a gone fishing- that’s prolly why that machines out of style)

Much to my surprise- that machine still cuts square & true
To the exact length of the Toyota motor mount.
Huuuuuuuhh?????? TRUE!

And we ended up with an extra 9 1/2 foot of 2" mild steel solid stock.
(supramania solid mount hookup now avail!) –lol :rof:

We fired up the Drill press and step drilled the solid mount (just over) 1/2" so the grade 8 bolts could pass through.

Next, I drill pressed the aluminum mount that goes to the motor to accept that 1/2" bolt as well.

That was so kewl!
I wanna be a full-time fabricator- (but the kind that keeps his fingers!)
Thanks uncle.
Sometimes in the middle of a mess, weve been blessed.
I look out for him, he does the same for me.

Yo- Time to wash up! Its time to purty up the supra.
***********************

I headed to the back of the yard- where the supe sleeps.
Strutted down my plywood runway

Inspected my SOLID concrete safety blocks for cracks-
lol-

lifted the hood- and

freekin oil freekin
Mississippi dirt.
Just another days work- no problem.

I sprayed some Red Dye Diesel in the bay and let it sit for a minute.
then i sprayed simple green to break down the oily mess.

Now some of the dirts gone- still got some more cleaning to do. Some areas are 5mm thick in tar-like grime.
I sprayed the engine bay again with more RED DYE- lettin it sit overnight.

Im bushed.

The work won’t run away from me (no matter how much I wish it would!)

aw sh** wat now...
Phone rings, …I got a call from my new manager.
I'll be starting as the Bail bondsman for my area within two weeks.
(aw man!- better hurry this DD rebuild. I gotta pay the bills ya know?)

Now I better get to bed for another early start.
Gotta Clean. Gotta Sand. Gotta prime. Gotta Paint the engine bay.
Hopefully the rest of the needed parts will arrive 2morrow

R&R is callin
this thread is long!
goodnite.

haha- jonathan1
your threads tell me ya still gettin busy too!:biglaugh:

Well....
Had a rough night- R&R didnt help
Head hurts and your body tells ya
too much buoy- ya gotta kno

I stayed up late reading n searchin the threads ARPs and fitting them to rods. i had to know what and why the mystery. there is some written history.
Even got a pm from IJ. He warned me... jez-Now I gotta do or be dead.
PRESS the rod side, Machine the cap.

today.

when I wiggled out the old broken bolt, it was an ARP!

I am sooooooo very lucky
HoldOn D*mmit- ARPS DONT BREAK!
Appearentlly thay can

The real questions are:
"WHAT HAS JON BEEN DOIN TO BREAK ARP ROD BOLTS and FLYWHEEL BOLTS????"
"SHOULD I RETORQUE THE rest of the RODS?"

BAM- then my wife drives up and says:
Ya got a package:
I grab it like a badly needed hit-

uhuh...(she said) kiss me for it first
(haha....) she got a greasy (lovely) smootch.
(btw- this is a vicious cycle- the motor did it to me, I do it to her- yaknowdarest)
;)

Got the rodbolts from charlesbboy!!!!
BIG UP! -Great transaction. just on time.

I didnt have to fool with the cap or rods.
To get the new rodbolt in, I removed the bearing on the cap.
Started soaking the rodbolt and cap in transmission fluid

Hunted for the gasket paper so I could cut a rectangular strip as a liner for the crank journal. I used the bearing as the reference and double folded the gasket paper

Inserted the new bolt to the rod, placed some washers on both sides
(To be careful not to distort the rodcap I stepped both sides till the cap laid flat.)
then step torqued the nut to 30lbs to get it in the rest of the way.

Now comes the test:
I plastigauged rod bearings for #1, it wasnt clearanced all that tight.
~.025 was the clearance. I felt it was a bit much clearance for a 3kmile motor.
Then again this was read at 47pds. I wasnt sure what pds was used in the first place.
Im sure it will tighten up with higher torque

Cleaned up the rod bearings and cap.
Used plenty of assembly lube on the bearing and journal
Step torqued it to 40 ft lbs (just for now)
Closed the oilpan for today. Now I wait for a crank scraper.

**Just had to put it this out there.**
there can be many problems with a rebuild.

Best advice: USE 5 P's (huh?)
**Prior Planning Prevents Poor Performance** :)
Gotta read up on clutch & transmission

IMO-living out here in workin in the yard? not the best place to rebuild.
Im gonna have ta build myself a workshed to do supratype3 worx someday

Got myself motivated to start swapping parts from the rodknocker to the rebuilt one.

nothin but
dirty dirty dirty dirty.
theres no elegance in dirt. unless it deals in realestate
Been cleaning -it seems for 2days now.

But I am heartbroken.
I was wishin for SHINY SHINY.
everything coming off the knocker is greasy and grimey.

That beautiful machine work cant be appreciated hidden in the stock stuff.

Lesson Learned:
I want it beautiful, but everything comes at a price.
Paid the price to know the motor is done right
Payin the price just to get it runnin quickly.

lol- you butthead...

But if I do well, the fund should come from workin. Imma lucky to have a Saturday night special takin care of mondays business.

13 is my lucky number-
I guess thats how much I'll boost.

IHI-RHC7 said:
You should really plastigauge between the bearing and the crank, not the bearing and the cap...
(people are really looking- thanks boss!)
That was the first pic of plastigauge. As IHI-RHC7 said: that is the wrong way to plastigauge.

it gave me a reading that was under 1/1000 of an inch. It read the space between the bearing and the Rod Cap.

yup- did it using another variation tho;

to finally get a reading:
The cap pulls up on the rod using the crank when torquing. I decided to lay the strip across the bottom bearing between the crank. I was in a hurry and I didnt clean the crank this time so the reading was a melting .050 :0) after cleaning (now the third time), I got a reading that was ~.025 or .035-

WTF?????
Has the bearings worn down to nearly halfway (in just under 3k miles)/ or are they sized wrong?
hmmm...
I'm considering just putting fresh rod bearings since its out of the car.
I would feel much better knowing the tolerances are right on the point.

iirc-That motor was on an FFIM + monglo mods.
It broke an ARP rodbolt (HAH! Got a 7m shark tooth!),
& 2 flywheel bolts.
Is it possible that stock internals + ARPS aint enough to play 500 all day?

I wont see that power right away, so I hope them long drives to and around work could give me a tough glossy break in on a new set.

Timing is Everything
Timing is my problem today.

I wanna go through the rest of the rods. I may find something else broken.
I would measure the crank to know what size (or oversize) rod bearings to get, then wait for shipping. takes some time to get it right.

But.....
Pss- If someone has a set of clevite rod bearings they wanna get rid of, LMK
I'll prolly get em of ya

man-DD needs back on the Road (git r duuun!). posting more pics l8tr 2nite
ughhhh! ;)

Got that DD on the road!

600 miles into the odo and 1 killed 86 camaro since MY LAST POST
WOW what a smooth idle.
Im using a solid motor mount on the intake side.
The exhaust side is using the stock round motor mount.
still getting rid of gremlins in the engine bay. (electronics & wires)
...def needs more cleanup/parts/upgrades- yaknowhatImean!

Out of fairness, I did take pics. and I'll continue the story.
So sorry guys. I had to buckle down and GitRDuun!
AND thanks guys. every bit helped so much!

On the next day I had to figure out a new way to get things done.
I was worn but not beaten

1st on that list:
I was tired of using manpower to move things around- so I recruited myself a new workbench; my pickup.
[lol- wife calls it the pick(em)up]

2nd on the list:
I had to separate the engine from the transmission.
Reading the TSRM I figured out the reverse clutch system for the R154

…- YOU CANT JUST TRY TO PULL IT OFF THE MOTOR! I know someone has used 2x4’s or crowbars to pry the transmission off. You might damage somethin if you do!

Removal and installation is suprasimple. Supras are just plain kewl.

But now it was time for the real test-

Looking inside I saw grime. If the clutch and flywheel are this close to grease- it wouldn’t have been long before there were slippage problems.

To begin I saw two ways of doin the removal for R158
(like a restaurant) “With” or “without” the pressure plate and clutch?
-lol I’ll have that tranny fully dressed, with the plate and fork on the side!

-in anycase, ya first remove the access plates
hmm… a stock aisin pressure plate

Next, pull off the “fork”

Its not a big (secret) thing. just pull it off the mount hook. easy as 123.

The tranny can be pulled off now, but I wanted to use the housing for leverage to loosen the pressure plate bolts.

VIOLA!
Tranny removed

I was less than impressed at the mess inside that tranny

No grease made its way to the pressure plate

3rd on the LIST: Too much dirt/grime/grease.
After a few days of tryin to clean old parts with chemicals or diesel- I knew that it was time to enlist something with more boooost!

Psssst! I lowered the rodknocker, tranny and all the dirty parts into the pick(em)up with the hoist.

Headed over to the local self-serve carwash and Pressure washed everything. It took me forever. I was covered head to toe in greasy residue.
Darkness settled over and I knew it was time to quit.

When I got home my wife said
“where were ya? Oh… your with that other b*tch”
I said …”huh? –ya mean I was with my b*tch… the supra…
She said- “it’s written all over your face- plus you stink like her”
The mirror doesn’t lie.

I was also tired, completely wet, and wanted to smoke a cigar really bad…

I looked guilty as sin

6000 Miles on the supe and no engine problems.
the problems im dealing with are the wires and multitude stock electronics.

however, justin hooked me up with a cooleze DP.
these are very nice.
Imma try n go str8 pipe 2 da back and lose the banged up flowmaster for a pimpin resonator tip. :)

meanwhile serious problems...
while at my pit stop today.
1) need CPS or I need to rebuild mine.
2) need front ball joints (ebay i guess)
3) right rear end has a bent strut rod.
4) all four rims are bent. paint is flaking.
5) engine harness is dried out.
6)- the rear end is shuddering. like the bushings are gone. am i gonna have ta get a new subframe?
7) Speedo stopped. Need short cable from tranny (1st cable in the link)
8) ct26 is leaking oil badly. seeking affordable solution NOW!
9) IC pipes and accordian need replacing. gonna try to go cooleeze.
10) NEEDS PAINT!

this supe pulls hard. it has a nasty misfire that really messes w/ me.
It screams for 550's and maftpro tho I wont go there till the current problems are fixed.

damn supe... still luv ya!

I made 13K miles on the supe today. I drove my supe to miami.

used I75 to get close.
got better than 23 mpg
plugs n wires have 3k.

btw dude. my supe is a speed freek. I cant wait for justin727's supra to run.

i got to go to some backwoods near homestead. opened up that supe.

It was dark n cool. i first went slo.
till i learned the rough spots.

pssst! chirp.

very easy to push 150.
I tried to drift the corners.
the toyo lsd is damn tight around corners.

when you push your supe, it will respond likewise.

mine is a 7M setup like a tank.
balanced and blueprinted stock parts on clevite rings, bearings,2mm MHG and ARP's.
i love the badboy to death.

i use a jspec 6puck stage 3 clutch and pressure plate.
very sweet hookup to power. with every push of the clutch it never gave.

the brakes are ceramic too. the harder i abused them they never faded.

careful planning and choices got this one working right for me.

exhaust sounds so sweet. Notin but a cooleeze and a flowmaster. fumes aint so pretty though.

I cruised all over miami and miami beach and now im more in luv with my supe than ever.

Tonite I make my way back to Mississippi.
