I hear this a lot. If I wanted a MKIV.. I would have bought a MKIV. They are 2 different cats. I could have bought a BMW.. or a fully done MKIII for what I paid and still have to put into my car. For some of us.. thats not the point.
We are stupid enough to chase the dream.. lol. Any car restoration project (and thats what I refer to these as) is going to cost premium $$. I researched and figure I will probably put about 40,000.00 into my car by the time I am done (and thats probably a bit low).
No way I am going to recover that.. but anyone who buys one of these for an investment is fooling themselves.
Anyone who buys a brand new car for 80,000 and thinks they will get 80,000 for it after 5-10 years is also fooling themselves. I always assume the MKIII owners know all this.. lol.
I personally dont like MKIV's. the MKIII is my Japanese corvette.. and Im happy with it.. regardless of the money. I have owned 5 brand new vehicles straight out of the dealership and have lost far more money on those than I will on this.
you just have to keep in mind the costs and see if its what you REALLY want to do. The car isn't at the point in its life cycle that you can cheap out and watch it survive unless you are highly skilled at doing your own work and fabbing parts.
I warn anyone about that.. hehe. Sure.. nice car.. but it aint cheap. The sad part is that a lot of people who pick up a MKIII are under 21 years of age, still got schooling ahead and are short of cash and dont realise that the car they paid 3000.00 for is 3000.00 for a reason. Or course seeing as the OP has 54 pages of rebuild thread.. I assume he is fully aware..
but dont toss me a MKIV simply becaues I could have bought one.. they have warts as well.
