I have a 1990 Supra non-turbo automatic that someday i hope to swap out if i have the money. what would you guys recommend? a 7m-gte or a 1jz-gte? i know with those there isn't much if any fabrication. what i really want to do is drop a 2jz-gte in it someday but that's a whole nother monster is what i've heard. so if you had to choose which would be better? the 7m-gte or the 1jz-gte?

This is like the sixth "7M or jz" thread I've seen, should do some searching.
I already know/see what this thread is going to turn into but, I'll chime in anyways :biglaugh:

My choice is obvious.

I would say both power plants are great. I mean look how old these cars are, and they still turn heads when you build them right. I live in Germany and ain't nothing like dust'n some fool who don't know how to drive a $100k ride. Which motor you choose depends on what you plan to use the car for and how you like to drive. I will say this...a good mechanic plus the correct parts will keep a smile on you face when you hit the gas!! Now isn't that what you really want!?

Nothing wrong with a properly setup 1jz in our cars.

Auto-X with one then get back to me. It is lacking the low end power to be effective in that type of condition.

Torque jokes are old.

Not a joke. The 1j power is on the upper banda sit should be since it need to be wound up. For Auto-X. Not good, at all. It is just like slapping a 3S-GTE in our cars. It is not a good thing unless you are revving the piss out of the motor or have custom gearing for the tranny AND rear diff to get the motor to wind up where it needs to be.

And if you want a spin happy motor. Hell the 3S is in fact a better option as you actually have the advantage of losing some much needed weight from the nose of the Supra.

That's great and all about the torque jokes since i have no idea what your talking about but so far i have heard go with the 1j... go with the 7m... that doesn't help my choice... if someone could give me specifics as to which engine would be better and what i would have to do about making it stronger that would be great. i don't have the money for anything right now but to be prepared for the future never hurts. thanks.

the short answer.

a 3400+ lbs car requires the power band either be BROAD or that the power band start on the lower rpm. That is unless you want to rev the motor to get the car to move. ALL THE TIME.

a properly built 7m will last just as long as a 1j. use the search and you find out what you need to do or want to do for either engines.

You guys still making 7m jokes saying 1jz's will last longer and be faster are just ignorant. I've seen just as many 1jz's blow up as 7m's. Like already stated by the non-idiot users here, 99% of the time it's the owners fault..ie if you swaped in a 1jz in place of your 7mgt because it blew up, it was more than likely your fault...Get off your 1jz high horse before i beat it to death with my extra 3000 pipe :evil2:
