WEELLLL it's about time i start one of these been putting it off for so long now.

The Car: 1987 N/A Auto Targa top with the sports package.

Story: bought this car for 300 bucks. It had a couple problems that were fixed over time. First it had a grinding LSD that the fool that owned it before ran without oil for unknown ammount of time. it was in a rear ender in it's life and it was completely bondoed on that side hardly noticeable. The trunk itself is lifted on one side but i figured out how to fix that too. it's something inside the hatch itself that was repaired during the body repairs that they effed up on so i shall correct that.

Now she started to develope a BHG which brings me to my build!

i wanted to go two or three routes with this build.

First i wanted to do an N/A-T build by gathering all the appropriate electronics. Second i wanted to go straight up turboed 7m-gte but with a lack of finding a decent block i couldn't exactly do much in that area. Third it was the 2jz but im a bit impatient. Of course that is also a possibility down the line. :)

I've decided between the first two, i found a prospective GTE block with a rod knock that i might check out this weekend. If i feel unsure about using the block ill just use all the electronics that come with it. Either way i have a fun time ahead of me.

Heres a few pics of the progress so far!

I suggest you go 2J if you plan it in the future. You will be saving the money and have a strong engine in stock form. Just my .02 cents.

2jz like i said would be an eventual plan. for now i wanna turbo a 7m. im gunna take it to DG Motors and get the surfaces flattened and inspected. then its ARP headstuds an cometic headgasket time. oh and a 3 angle valve job.

Inspected first, then machined... sucks to spend lots of $$$ in machinework just to find the head is annealed and won't hold exhaust studs for love or money. Especially when a hardness test takes seconds, not minutes, and most shops will do it for free.

Is that body sound to be building on Matt?

yeahhh it should be i've inspected it as has a toyota mechanic. just needs lots and lots and lots of tender love and care ;) aka. lots of bushings and the sort. the frame itself was never tweaked in any matter. except in that side panel.

HURR DURR IJ :), nah i took the head off over the weekend. REALLY CRAPPY WEATHER OUT. i found that the exhaust side was not torqued down correctly and the entire side of the gasket's copper water jackets were crimped im surprised this car ran as well as it did.

oh as i was taking off the valve covers i found a head removal bit still hanging on the exhaust side on one of the corners :). this guy was a reallll clown. im happy i saved this car from him.

Pics to come later!

also how did you guys manage to take off the crank pulley? that thing is NOT coming off.

:aigo:

i also got my bonus check today so it will be off to the machine shop! hopefully i can keep most of the work at at least 1500...the engine ran fantastic even with this going on.

yeahh it sucks :\ but what can you do! rebuild! hahaha

so i got into a discussion with my buddy about my build and he thought it might be more cost effective to get rings for my current pistons instead of forged because i have to go through the balancing process and crap like that. now, my goal is to make about 500 horse eventually so would forged pistons really be necissary or could i get away with doing NPR turbo pistons and doing a tune like no other? till i can afford an AEM ECU i was gunna just run stock power or around there with the 550/lexus AFM mod and a cam regrind.

p.s. i know the NPR power tolerence thing has been discussed to the ground ive read up on them hahaha i was just curious of your guy's opinions.

hey guys im about to go rip my crap apart but ive been searching around lately on every vendor i can think of aside from toyota.

but anyone know of any good OEM like quality or performance valves? i was thinking of going brian crower or comp valve springs/retainers as i cant seem to find any valves under 400 bucks. anyone know of any good vendors that has em for cheaper?

Looks fine if you ignore the Tard Inside ;)

Semi common failure, I took steps to prevent it for my 7M.

IJ, would you mind give a little more detailed description of what/how you did that?
Did you use all the shims, need of rebalancing etc...

Sorry if Im cluttering the OP thread, if so Ill make a new one.

basically you need 4age ARP flywheel bolts, and tap the torque converter to M10 bolt's or something i forgot the specific number but really there's not much you need to do.

pancake the two flexplates together and those ARP bolts :)
