Never EVER booost in 5th gear.. either rev it higher or stop... 5th gear is a Over drive gear & you can def hurt your motor that way.. .

Are you boost breaking? I can't really tell or hear it lol... AWESOME number!!! 722HP at 30 PSI... Jealous here lol....

his 5th is probably about as short as a lot of guy's 4th gears on here... the only possible issue I can think of is creep... in that case you need to work on your WG setup

i wonder how a 62 precision would compare to the t70 on this car. i love this setup 700hp is no joke at all. specially in a jz motor that thing is gonna break hearts on the highway lol

Thinking about doing like a 50shot at 3k, the turn it off once boost hits. should give me a better powerband
You know what else would give you a much better powerband? Porting and a ball bearing turbo. ;) If that isn't enough, then throw on the laughing gas, just not too soon junior.

A buddy up here has had a T70 with a .84 AR on his 7m. I let him borrow the Comp 6265 BB that I bought (thanks again for the recommendation Albert!), and even with a .7x (.70 I think, it's been a long time since I bothered looking into it) AR, he says it spools around 1500 rpm and then absolutely comes uncorked. His T70 did the same... at 3500.

5th gear is a OVERDRIVE GEAR!!!! you do not boost on it.. it's extra stressful... if the R-154 gearing with the 3.91 are too short then it's time to move to a 3.73... if that is tooooo short (which I doubt it) he can get a 3.53... but never ever boost in 5th gear.. why you think the high HP MKIV keep it in 5th gear & not 6th in the mile.. their 5th gear is a 1 to 1 gear.. same as a R-154 1 to 1..

it was my understanding that 6th was too long to even use, anyhow, I doubt there are many people that don't boost in 5th gear. If it was so stressful you think they would've equipped a 120mph speed limiter on our cars

Actually every JDM car is eqipped with a speed cut at 118mph.. I do not recall if USDM MKIII's have a speed cut????

nope, we have none... I've hit 165mph 3 times... I've hit 140 countless times (at least 100 times)

I'll say though, the car I have right now... blew the harmonic balancer somehow when the previous owner hit 165 with it

Well thank you for refreshing my memory & USDM MKIII's have no speed cut.. but the JDM one do...

so I'm still curious about this... I thought someone else would've chimed in... but is OD considered too stressful because the engine is making max output without increasing it's rotational speed fast enough? IDK trying to figure where you're coming from w/ that statement

Someone want to agree or expand on this statement about not boosting in 5th gear on a R154? Its a 5 speed transmission (manual) so I have never considered it an "overdrive"...

Umm ive always been told not to boost in a high gear(4th or 5th) if youre not up to the speed...... too much load onto the engine

5th gear is the over drive in the R-154

well, I have never "boosted" in 5th, but I have had a couple pounds of boost come on while driving through the mountains. Generally just an extra push up steep inclines.
Never considered that it might be putting adverse strain on the engine, and dont really know of a way to shut it off.

In a "race", I dont think I have ever hit 5th gear...

WHat I mean is... YOu should never ever race in 5th gear especially if you are boosting high....

So my assumption is at least somewhat correct? I knew 5th was OD (same way 4th would be OD if you only have 4 gears) but I've never been told not to push the engine in that gear.

Still makes me curious though... since a 6 speed essentially has 2 OD gears... I know a getrag 5th gear has got to be about the same width as the r-154 5th (if not wider) but I know plenty of mkiv guys push their cars over the 200mph limit o_O

One thing I love doing is obviously word for word what you said not to do, but just to be clear it is bad to boost in OD no matter the rpms? Because I love torquing past people without having to downshift.

I know the local cobra guys won't ever race in sixth gear, because they say they'll blow their motor. I don't know for a fact that I've ever raced in fifth gear, but I don't think I've ever made it a point not too. I'm usually so far ahead by third gear that I'm coasting in fourth to give them a chance to catch up.
