I think you would be doing yourself a serious disservice if you went any lower than 3.7 in an NA...

Hell, I wouldn't even go lower and I'm turbo.

I don't care about acceleration or speed, I'm looking for maximum drivability and gas milage. I'm gonna put a 3.73 on mine for now and see how i like it, I'll repost and let yall know.

Here's my 2 cents....It's a supra and its about as heavy as a tank. Then you add a straight 6 with a turbo (2 for some of us) and good driving habits go out the window. And you expect to have good gas mileage.

If you want excellent gas mileage, buy my 90 civic HB and you'll get 38mpg high way. It even has HID's.

lol, I have a daily driver, it's a Del Sol, Extremely gay, but i managed 40mpg... I love driving my supra alot more. I think a 3.73 is going to be as Wide as i would wanna go. My friends got a Crown Victoria with a 4.6L V8 and it's got a 2.73 i'm guessing.... and he can get 28mpg... My supra has less power but gets worst gas milage, now that's not right.. lol ... I completely dominate him in a race though.. lol

Yea that crown vic makes like 270-290ftlbs, they do like 20-25mpg. in a 3700lbs car your almost the same weight (depending on certain shit), makin 188ftlbs (and thats rated) you go that low and i think the motors gonna struggle a little.

3.93 would be a much better choice if you just have to change it. Jumpping from 4.30 to 3.93 is a pretty big jump,4.30 to 3.73 is huge.

ok well at 6500 rpms if you go 152 then your going to be at 81 mph at 3500 rpms, so your math is wrong somewhere. Im using division, real world experience, and multiplication, not basing it on tire size or gear ratios. If your at 3500 going 70 like you say, your only going to able to go 150 at 7500 rpm redline. That calculator isnt too accurate. And your going to wear your clutch our a lot faster with that massive gear ratio change. and totally kill any performance you are getting anyways. and yes v8s are generally geared like a bitch so they get acceptable fuel mileage. even sports cars with v8s. The 1st gear in the ls1 trans am goes to over 40 mph and 2nd to at least 75. In the one i drove at least. And will turn 1700 rpms going 65 mph. yay for 6 gears.

I'm gonna give it a go none the less, If i don't like it, i have my 4.30 sittin in my garage.. or i could try the 3.93 rear end. The 4.30 is WAY to short... going down the highway in 5th at 3500 .. your mid power band if u nail it ur gonna get pushed in the seat, and that's unnecessary for gas milage, you wanna stay out of the torque band... 2700rpm a very nice rpm with plenty of passing power.. and great gas milage.

5th gear at 3500 rpm is close to 85 mph. I tried it today. Either your speedometer is way off, or you're having clutch issues.

I would still drop it in 4th for a freeway run. I'd shift out of 4th around 110 when I was NA, so there's no need to floor it in 5th @ 80. Not to mention you guys are speeding quite a bit, I dunno what the speed limit is where you live but here it's 65. I've already gotten 2 speeding tickets, and am not going to get another one by going 80+ on the freeway and killing gas. I keep my speed under 75 at all times on the freeway but it usually is more around 70 mph.

In response to Isphius, note that the following is for an R154 (Not a w58 so it may be SLIGHTLY different), and my tires are 245/50/16 instead of the stock 225/50/16 or w/e.
3000 RPMS in 5th = 71 mph
3500 RPMS in 5th = 82 mph
6500 RPMS in 5th = 153 mph (I was told 152.8 before with stock tire size/w58)
7500 RPMS in 5th = 177 mph

Yes there is that much of a difference. I gain 24 mph from adding the 1000 RPMS till redline, since I'm 1jz and not 7m. And just for shits and giggles, if I got an aftermarket ecu and revved to 8,000:

8000 RPMS in 5th gear = 189 mph

I'm pretty sure the posted calculator rounds up or down, since it won't show any decimals. But for the most part the #'s definetely seem correct.

I have the 3.73 in my car with 7MGE and it really sux. I just talked to my local "Taliban" connection here and he is going to the junkyard to see if he can either get me the 87 turbo dif or NA at 4.30. There are only about 7 supras here in Kuwait in the yards so Im not holding my breath and its run by Afgani's which is why I have someone that can speak their language dicker with them. They see me the rich "americi" and the price doubles.
My all around performance really suffers with this dif. 0-60 is just around 9.2
and in 5th I can barely get it to 5200 RPM let alone redline and my mileage has never been better than 18 MPG and is usually around 16.5 with the majority being freeway miles.
My 0-60 used to be over 11 but I did a few mods to help that out.
mods are,
1. Simota intake filter (simular to FIPK but dry)(Wrapped the AFM and plasic bucket cut to fit the filter with some duct wrap, sticky on one side and reflective on the other for heat protection bought from ACE).
2. Pacesetter headers wrapped with 2.5 connection instaed of the one that came with it. I had a custum 2.5 freeflowing muffler with 2 little glass packs but it was annoyingly loud so I bolted up the stocker and the performance is actully a little better not to mention quieter.
3. Fidanza lightweight flywheel
4. Took off the sawblades and used the 89+ wheels which are a little lighter.

Future mods will be
1. lightweight driveshaft
2. MAFT (after I can see posted dynos compared to stock)
I should have the new dif in about 1 1/2 weeks and Ill post the new results at that time.

im sure i'm late on this.. i had a 4.30 in my 87 and switched to a 3.91.. around town gasmilage was about the same went from 18-19 to 19-20. Highway was a big improvment, from 20-21 to 24-25. It was in a turbo car though..

f00g00, 16.5MPG????? That's horrible! I'd spend some time looking for what's wrong with your car before I worried about adding a MAFT Pro for more power.

I drove 230 miles about two weeks ago to pick up my brother in law for a funeral. I filled my tank before leaving and I filled it when I got back. I used a little over half a tank. I know my system doesn't compare to yours, but most of the other N/A guys are seeing MUCH better mileage as well. I'm running a 3.91 LSD, by the way.

Uhmm, Taliban? Do you even know who the Taliban is?

Anyway, there are many 7MGE Cressida's if you didn't notice. Problem is, they are still on the road. They never die if you don't destroy them. You might be able to find a crashed one.

erm yes I do, Quite a few of the afgani and Pashtun pakistani expats here that are working here in Kuwait are Taliban supporters because they consider them "Hard" muslims.
anywayz I had the new LSD put in today and the gearing is really weird. For one full turn of the wheel its moving the driveshaftabout 4.1. it looks more than 3,91 and less than 4.30, its just barely getting past 4.
To top it off, on the drive to the mechanics my speedo craps out so I thing the gear in the transmission took a dump on me. The cable spins freely with the cable off. I won't know about performance and economy improvement till I get that fixed.
Team america world police was a great movie btw.

The Cressida is 3.91:1, and that sounds like what you have. Mark the inside of the tire with tire chalk, and the same with the drive shaft, so you get an accurate count.

I will save the politcal commentary for the appropriate section, do the same.

I think its a 4.30, I got the dif from a supra and its the last one in the yard here so Im keeping the old one for the future if I decide to go turbo. It is a LSD which I didn't think the cressidas had. Also the 7MGE was in the Crowns which are more prevalent here but they didn't get exported to the USA.
The RPM seems to coincide with a 4.30 when my speedo works on deceleration it reads about 3100@ 70MPH but the speedo was shakey at best.

Yeah, I don't want my car to suffer so much with a 3.73... I wonder if i could find someone who could just possibly put a Wider gear for 5th in my transmission so i could have good acceleration but good gas milage in 5th gear...
