got her all back together, motor turns over but will not start....only sputters a bit. I'm thinking timing is off, but I have aftermarket crank pulley, so no notches to go by.

did you prime the fuel?

Did you get the red wires hooked up? If not they go to the harness by the fuse box.

it is in fact the very one you mentioned. (was on there when I got the car) Therefore I have never been able to set the timing, or figure out how to.

The UR underdrive pulley is commonly reported to cause premature failure to a number of parts in the rotating assembly.
The factory unit is somewhat dampened by its rubber isolator. This absorbs much of the engine's vibration. the UR crank pulley
does not do this at all. Plus, you're really not going to get ANY measurable performance from the aftermarket unit.
PS- I like your screen name.

Ok update time. 2 of my car club buddies came over to help me see whats up. They found 2 vacuum leaks which were fixed. My Supra will now sort of sputter-run for about 5 seconds and then die. On the plus side, one of the guys has 2 MkIII's, 1 is a parts car...in which he said I could have the OEM crank pulley from it. I get that tomorrow, so I will go from there.

Hooray for OEM crank pulley!
Hooray for beer!
but I digress....

Sounds like you might just be off on the cps position. Once you have the pulley in place, it'll be easier to check.
Keep us posted.

if you cant get ur hands on another crank pulley in a reasonable amount of time. you could remove #1 spark plug and put and extension in there (so that you can see it sticking out.. dont lose it in there!! lol) and then turn the crank to see it rising to its highest position.. that will be tdc. mark it at tdc on number 0 on the crank using something visible. then align ur cams and cps etc...

or just wait and get a stock crank pulley lol

tried to start it again after letting it sit all night. It sputtered pretty good a couple times. I pulled plug 1 and checked for spark...it's good. I'm wondering if the timing being way out would keep it from starting? My neighbor is a mechanic and when he gets up, I'll see if he can help me. I'll put piston 1 at TDC and mark the pulley, and he has a timing light. I have tried moving the CPS around, with only sputters as a result.

Oh and Kevin, thats exactly how a set piston 1 before the head was pulled lol. I have'nt touched the cams at all though, so they should still be fine I guess

check vac lines, fuel lines, etc.. (im sure you did though)

you need to make sure your cams are both at tdc when the crank is at tdc (cams should be pointing straight up.. aligned with the marks)
double check to see if the #1 piston is at tdc when the crank is at tdc.. now everything is at tdc.. take out ur cps.. align the notch and re-insert it (try putting it back as close to the spot you had it at before the head gasket change.. this will help make it idle easier and help u in setting the timing)

Ok I just reset number 1 piston at TDC, and cams are in fact pointing straight up. I put a mark on the pulley where the 0 is. Now I just gotta wait on my neighbor with his timing light. What do you mean by aligning the notch on the cps? All I did was pull it out, then put it back in...I never moved the gears or anything.

Yea the CPS is way off. I'm having trouble getting it to align. I am putting it in lined up, but after it spins when I insert it, it is stiff/rigid and won't move. What am I doing wrong ?

you should see theres a notch on the gear that you are sopposed to line up with another notch.. line those two up and insert the cps.. try your best to push it in as straight as possible so it only turns how much it needs to turn.. did you skim through the threads? and look at the tsrm?

basically the above is to compensate for the turning that happens when you put it in.
hope that helps
