If my 1jz were ever to blow up, which it will. I'd save up and build it with forged Rods, forged pistons, knife edged crank etc etc etc before I went 2jz.

I went with the 1j in my case because I found a nice motor with transmission for a good price. Never hurts to have an extra r154 around. ;)

I knew either engine would make more power than I would ever need... and I'm considering a 2j for the Chevy, so... we'll see. Never actually driven a 2j car, but I'm perfectly happy with how my 1j car drives.

Lol I can afford a 2jz. Shit i got one in my other car. Still love my 1jz over it hands down everyday of the week and twice on Sunday's

Its a NA 2j...i would hate a 1j non turbo if i had one also lol.

Im thinking a billet 67mm with a qsv will get u close on pump. Should give power and responsivness.

I'd love to see someone do it, because I'd love to see a reasonable comparison to my 2J.

From the 10+ years of ownership I could of had a 1200+rwhp MKIV but who wants to be seen in a jelly bean with a wing, and a car that girls think is cute like hello kitty accessories?!?! o_O

Yeah, money definitely wasn't the issue on my end. Came down to either the engine I bought, or wait for a VVTI 2j. Total difference in price would have been around $1000, and that really isn't all that much at this point in the game...

Same here. I figure in the last 6.5 years of Supra ownership, I probably have spent upwards of $30k... maybe more, not real sure. Don't want to total up receipts haha... this is why I try to suggest that people have a goal in mind before starting a car build. Gets expensive to wander aimlessly, you know?

That said, wandering aimlessly is a good way (if expensive) to find out what one does not want in a car...

Who said anything about an MKIV?
Just a hypothetical, pointing out how much he's spent on all the Supras he's had up to this point, and the relative expense of owning/building a Mk4.

Add me to the I could afford a 2JZ, I love the 1JZ, call me KRAZY!! but who in there right mind upgrades to a GT4276 on a 1JZ, BAcked by a RPS carbon/carbon twin disk with a Brand new GETRAG??? Right now I am just tuning on pump gas, no solid numbers as my butt dyno can be super off, I need to stop slacking & get it on a dyno to see where I stand on power, I belive I can make somewhere in the range of 550-600hp on pump, BTW... Whoever said a 1JZ can't spool at GT42 base turbo.. they need a ride on my car.. lol.. I really can't wait to tune it on E-85.. then the fun really starts...

Lol one day I'll take 2jzgte GSC s3 cams (290 11.3mm lift) machine them to fit into my 1jz. Go shimless with upgraded valves. L91 studs. Built motor. Huge turbo. And with my 128proefi computer pop out 1000+

Sweet.

I hear E-85 and Meth smells like bubblegum.

Probably smells like moonshine :)

As was pretty much said earlier in the thread, I think the 2J just has been pushed and prodded much more over the years and the 1J modding has been on the back burner compared to the high dollar, high competition 2JZ-GTE scene. Now it seems over the last few years-ish, many more people are swapping them and pushing 1Js hard, so more data is coming in on what they can handle and what is 'common knowledge' on the 1J may be changing.

Instead of 'that one guy with the 600hp 1JZ on that forum', I now know personally a few 500+whp 1JZs on pump gas in my area. I will be moving from 440whp to over 500 soon enough after adding a Bosch 044 in-line to my in-tank setup and switching out my 550cc injectors for something in the 700ccish range. That's really just for my own peace of mind, I probably could hit 500whp as it sits.

When I first started modding my 1JZ I never imagined I would be running 500whp on pump gas, I thought that was an instant ticket to piston failure. I was pretty leery of even my 440whp boost level on pump gas! And yet the 500+ pump gas 1JZs just keep popping up.

Basically what I'm saying is, the 1JZ seems to be holding a STRONG rep of it's own and maybe the boundaries are really being stretched by enough people to really cement the data on what can and cannot be done with one with different parts combinations. That's pretty cool.

edit edit - I also would like to add my dyno run to the horsepower list, but it was run for fun at a show in Tampa. So no sheet. (Even though I asked them to e-mail it to me. I was not shocked when that did not happen.) Another slacker 1J owner haha

This is what is in the catchcan after a drive, a single drive about 20 miles, in a rotary E85 catch can.

I think I'd be happy with 500 for a street car, but I figure why not try for 600-700whp? We recently have gained access to e85 locally. Not crazy about the politics of it, but it's cheap race fuel, and out in BFE, you don't have many alternatives.
