1) Remove the FCD asap
2) Locate and repair your vacuum leak
3) Make sure you are re-routing your bov to the stock intake!! If you are venting without having a speed density setup you are just shooting yourself in the foot.

Are you sure you don't have a vacuum leak? That would cause your car to run rich resulting in your backfiring.
How many miles are on the motor? It's not uncommon for higher mileage motors to have bad valve seals. That will cause you to burn oil, which is what you could be smelling and seeing...
Exhaust leaks? Backfire? Burning oil (valve seals?), BHG burning coolant? Is the pop like a grinding metal/metal pop or an explosion pop, like a backfire? What does it smell like?
