I think that suspension is a great place to start and is usually one of the most neglected parts of the car. Upgrading your suspension is something you can do that will apply just as well to a turbo car as an NA car.

Personally, I find the white to be less blinding than blue gauges. I don't know how people drive around with those things at night, they hurt my eyes sitting next to them at a stop light. I'm sticking with the stock gauge lights. I find they are bright enough to tell me what the gauges say...
What about a third gen Camaro? I've seen Z28s go for $3k and parts are cheap and everywhere. My brother had a modded Camaro when I was a kid and it had my mom's Grand National beat all to hell.

Jeeps are annoying. They're fun to drive, yes, but their so idiosyncratic in their construction it's hardly worth it to buy one. I've always like jeeps for off-roading, especially the old CJ's, but I've despised pretty much every one I've ever worked on.
Wiring. After 16+ years the grounds are bad, the connectors are brittle, and the wires are corroded. When I first got my car I spent more time chasing shorts and bad grounds than anything else.
