I would say its "not 100% necessary" but it will help with warming up quicker and keeping oil at the right temps. Some setup's that run a big oil cooler can cool to much and keep oil too cold for street driving. Where the thermostat will help keep it at a constant temp. But Im no expert...

Pretty much most cars/ trucks have had a low oil light since about 2000'. Maybe only "budget" cars don't have it.
Last car I have owned that didn't have one was a 1991 Pontiac Bonneville
