Fitted my C's short shifter today but it will not go into 5th. Finds every gear even reverse but will not go inot the top corner. Standard one works fine Any ideas?

Just taken off the head off due to a snapped water union at the back of the head. To my suprise is had/has a MHG but just one problem below The scratches must have been there when the MHG was put on as a can see the marks of them on the gasket the engine ran fine so it must have sealed...
