i would 2nd bad u-joints. my old pickup had the exact same problem. every time i let of the gas it would clang. i change the u-joints and no more clanging. they are a bitch to change just to let you know.

i just tore my spare motor apart that was sitting in my garage. the crank pully bolt cam of no problem with a snap-on impact gun. that is what i would recommend. crank up the psi on the compressor too. i think mine was at 150psi. the hammering of the impact gun is what gets it.

make sure you don't have excessive oil in the pan. that will get shit load of oil in you accordian hose and low ic pipe through the pcv system. it might sound stupid, but check to make sure. for a while i was all paraniod after i got rodknock thinking and extra quart or two of oil would help...
