It has to do with the cruise control. Your year has the activation switch on the left of the wheel, and an 89 has it on the wheel itself. The activation switch was replaced with a coin holder in 89's and then with the dimmer switch on 90+'s... itll fit fine, but you won't have working cruise...

maybe the battery wasn't being charged, but it had enough power to start it and run for a bit before it finally kicked the bucket.. this happened to me a while back, the alternator was the culprit..
