Thanks for all the support folks, I got a VERY good tip from Brian on this board and Socalsupras, about it possibly being stolen and in Compton. Compton of course is famous for it's crime, and a few miles from here, so it's a likely scenario...

Well, not to discredit you, but engine swaps didn't start 5 years ago, some people swap out a brand new car's engine sometimes while there's still plastic on the seats...
nice and hidden, only downside I can see is that cup's spring fails very often, like yours, causing it not to spring open..
or the little piece holding it closed breaks causing the cup to shoot open anytime you put your arm on the center console..:D
