Take the ds off the diff and try to wiggle the diff. see if the diff itself has play. If not then it eliminates that as a possibility and you can pull the ds off that third parts car you said you have.
EDIT: Also make sure your flywheel is not loose.
That sounds like the best place to start, i broke a motor mount in my chevelle and the motor litteraly slamed the broken mount when load was added/removed. I think a bad mount would be a little worse then vibration and under no load out of gear sould not be to noticable.
