Ok. As you can see in my sig, I'm trying to make it to PRE for a dyno run tomorrow morning. I just found a busted motor mount on my 91 and need a quick answer. Here's the question:

Will 87 motor mounts fit on my 91 without any modifications?

Thanks...

CRAP!!!!

There's no way I'm driving to 3 hours with the vibrations I'm experiencing. I guess she won't make it tomorrow. Bummer... :(

Thanks IJ!

Hell, go to the store and grab a block of aluminum stock, cut to size, grab some good bolts/washers/nuts and bam, you're back in business with a solid motor mount.

No way in hell I'd miss a dyno session for a busted motor mount.

I have two new OEM engine mounts sitting on my work bench. I know they wouldn't get to you by tomorrow but let me know if you need them. Maybe you can postpone your dyno run until next week?

Well, here's my concern.

I have a vibration. A significant one. I have switched out drivelines with one that has a new carrier bearing and all new u-joints.

My tires are brand new.

My tranny mount is good.

The vibration is not rpm dependant, or load dependant. Clutch out and coasting, I feel it in my feet and it reverberates throughout the car. The faster I go the worse it gets.

This comes after I did a couple burn outs with the old tires.

Any ideas...? I surely DON'T want to miss my first dyno run; but, don't want to destroy my car either!

EDIT: As far as a parts car, I have an 87 right next to my 91 in the garage and an 89 currently on a car trailer and it doesn't run.

New info!

When I grab the driveline where it mounts to the rearend, it has some side-to-side play. This makes sense because when I let my clutch out, I here/feel a little clunk.

Could the rearend be my source of vibrations?

I'm still leaning toward my one motormount being the cause; but, still waiting for your ideas... :)

How much play is some?

Hmm... 1/32 to 1/16 of an inch maybe. My 87 has no play at all.

That sounds like the best place to start, i broke a motor mount in my chevelle and the motor litteraly slamed the broken mount when load was added/removed. I think a bad mount would be a little worse then vibration and under no load out of gear sould not be to noticable.

Sounds like the rear portion of the ds (2 tubes bonded together) broke loose...ujoints out of sync when this happens causing vibrations...or your diff needs rebuilt

I just took out my 91 ds due to a bad carrier bearing and installed my 87 ds which has a new carrier bearing and u-joints; but, it is not lined up like you mentioned. I figured it was because the tard that replaced the carrier bearing didn't take the time to line it up right.

Maybe both of my driveshafts have problems.

Take the ds off the diff and try to wiggle the diff. see if the diff itself has play. If not then it eliminates that as a possibility and you can pull the ds off that third parts car you said you have.
EDIT: Also make sure your flywheel is not loose.

Yeah, I stuck a screwdriver in the inspection ports on the tranny and pry'd on the flywheel and the pressure plate. My clutch and fidanza are newly installed. Like 1k miles...

I'm going for the driveline now. Be back after I take it for a test drive.

Gaboon might be on to something. I switched back to the 91 driveline and it did get better. There is still enough vibration there to be concerning though. My guess is that the carrier bearing and/or u-joints on the 91 driveline are definitely bad.

So given all the info...what do you guys think...should I drive it approximately 600 miles this weekend?

Don't worry I won't hold anyone to anything, I'm just thinking that if the vibrations are due to a bad carrier bearing and/or u-joints, it oughta make the trip without any further ill affects to anything.

I'll obviously have to wait to replace the u-joints till I get back because I'm leaving in the morning.

Those vibrations are ruff on bearings...also...this happened to me and it blew the tail housing bearing...expensive fix and was cheaper to buy another trans...

Don't drive the car! If I was you, I'd order a shaftmasters single piece ds...many here use them with 100% satisfaction...even I have a shaftmaster. It's like $340 shipped and the center support bearing is $260 from toyota not to mention the cost of haveing your stock ds fixed or remade.

It's not rattling the teeth out of my head or anything like that. It's just not as smooth as it was. It's about 60% better switching back to the 91 driveline.

Yeah, I'd hate to damage anything. Maybe I'll take it out for another ride and decide.

My vibration only varies with speed. Not with load or RPM's.

How bad was your vibrations and how would you describe them?
