Stiff is not always better... So many people think that because the ride is very stiff/head rattling, that it's optimal for handling. On a track? Yeah, generally. On the street? Not so much.
Chances are that the knock sensors are fine, it's just the wiring to them that's damaged (as you stated).
Do this:

Or find someone to do it for you.
The knock sensors are NOT useless. The previous owner of your car is a half-wit.
That car looks great, Boris. :)
If I were you, I'd retrofit the DJ's before you put them in. While the plastics of those housings are superior to nearly every other housing on the market for the e36, the low beam projector lenses are pretty dismal. Often times they'll have visible air bubbles...
Here's a great post from jdub regarding this very issue:

And to aid you in figuring out what you do/don't need, here's a good diagram of coolant flow:
I had picked one up a while back. It arrived in a damaged state (was damaged even before shipping)- I stuck it on the back of the car and decided that it's almost right. There are a few things I'd have to change about it to make it juuuust right, so I went with a Whale Tail instead.
Hey Mike! :)
Most of the oldschool guys are still around, but many don't post too often anymore. :(
drjonez is around. He finally finished the black car (), then parted it out. See here for pics of it pretty much finished...
That's the same link I was going to provide. :) Well done! (and I agree 100%!)
You heard correctly. I believe it was Daniel Stern who did a comparison- the Cibie's are well worth the extra coin, simply judging by his findings.
Please, never put HID's in reflector style housings that were...
Check your timing. You said you had the head off. It's a common problem for people to put them back together out of time. Retarded timing would make your car wicked slow.
Front MKIV TT brakes have been fitted to the MKIII before. I believe they used the MKIV spindles, which sets the wheels further toward the rear of the car- it looks terrible.
With all the fantastic BBK options out there today, there's no reason to do this. The rears I can understand.
If you're nimble, you sure can. Literally, the only tools I used were:
-3/8" drive ratchet
-A plethora of different extensions. Ideally, you'll want a 1', 6", 4", and a universal joint
-13mm socket
-10mm socket
-Flatblade screwdriver
-Drop light to see what I'm looking at
-Flashlight for places...
Update: I replaced knock sensors 1 and 2 last night. It took me about 2.5hrs w/ basic hand tools in my driveway. No more CEL flash between shifts 1-2, and a noticeable amount more torque down low! Much better for around town cruising when you roll into the skinny pedal to scoot around things, or...
