My dads a security op in Iraq for the past 2 1/2 years, he also served in the United States Marine corps for 15 years, the m-16 is a good weapon but its time has come, it needs replacing badly, its too large for urban or thick foliage enviroments, its heavy compared to newer assault rifles, and is not as accurate or powerful as a lot of newer weapons being tested and possibly introduced to the U.S. aresenal. They have found as have many U.S. Specil forces members that the H&K g36 is a much better weapon, lighter, more punch, more reliable, and easier to manuever, as well as better accuracy. The m-16 is good but its showing its age in the new battlefields emerging.

I find the M-16/AR-15 quite the opposite. They are very lightweight, easy to clean & maintain, reliable & highly accurate. The fact that, with minor upgrades & revisions, it's been our Armed Services service rifle for almost 40 years speaks volumes. I haven't personally fired the M4, but it's not too different from the CAR-16, so I'm sure it rocks.

There are but a few weapons I would rather carry, and I would only consider those weapons in special conditions, so I don't consider them true service rifles.

I agree with rakkasan, you can not say too many bad things about a weapon that we have been using for more years than most people on this board have been alive. I have fired many guns because my family is heavily into them and my best friends brother runs charley range at Camp Lejeune and he always tells us what weapons they are using and which ones we should look into using(I mostly stick with .223's because he sends us boxes of amo!) I have only fired the m-16 a few times and it is amazing. I have shot an ak and all things aside I think that is the best weapon because you can shoot it under water, full of sand, etc.(so we have been told by marines, I do not know by experience), but the m-16 is still a beauty.

I have fired several different varients of the AK. Most of my time on the ranges with the AK's were in Ft Benning, firing them as an orientation for Basic Trainees. We would try to schedule the live fire at night, so the tracers would show better.

To make a long story short, if I ever get fired upon by someone with an AK, I hope they're aiming right at me because the rounds go everwhere but where they're being aimed.

Also, as for the knock down power of the 5.56mm. If it hits you, you are going down. Your not talking about an elk or a moose that has the instinct to run upon danger, we're talking about hitting humans. Hit them with a 5.56, and they go down.

Yeah I was not saying an ak is my favorite weapon, I was just saying it would be nice to have a weapon that can almost be fired no matter what happens to it. For me it is too big of a weapon as I mostly shoot 223's or shotguns, not 30-06 or guns like that unless we are hunting large animals.

The AK can't be bad, cause the weapon holds Guiness record. IIRC then most used firearm or smt in wars. Ok, it really can't be precise like G36 (but still best reliability as said:icon_razz), but you can't also compare the price:naughty:

The AK was and is used by the poorest countries in the world. The former Soviet Union flooded the market to help raise money for their starving communist government. And to be difficult.

The M16 is the lightest weapon I have held. All others were heavier. And it is very accurate where it needs to be.

But we will always be looking for something better. Who isnt?

The m16's/ar15's and m4's are my most favorite weapons to fire. Not accurate? Go sit down in the sand with full camo on 400m away from me and I'll bet you a paycheck that you will die from a head shot.

Israel is field testing a new assault rifle as we speak. I forgot what the name of it is, but it is what we will be getting as well. I think the Army wants to start implementing them in about a year.

where to start...

There is nothing wrong with the AR platform. Heavy? You have got to be shitting me, an M4 is about the lightest rifle you will ever hold.

Is the ammo the best? No. M855 and M193 are made for barrier penetration and stopping. Because they are a balance, they wont always be the best in all situations. Sure the ammo could be changed to a 75gr BTHP load and basically pop terrorist little fucks like balloons, but that loading would not penetrate like M855 nor have the range. It also might not do squat if the raggies are behind cover. Is there room for improvement in the 5.56 family loads used for standard issue? Yes. But that’s an ammo/load issue, not a platform issue.

There are now several piston uppers available for the standard AR lower. Reliability of an AK, 98% of the accuracy of a AR.

There is nothing wrong at all with the AR family. Anyone who says else wise just puts on grand display their ignorance of basic ammo load outs. Not to mention weapons platform knowledge…
