also the oil pickup should be lowered, stock it is way too high, the main cause for rodknock. i haven't fixed mine yet, so i just run a quart extra oil always.

I'd say people simply running their cars out of oil is the biggest cause of rodknock.....

I think if the 7M had had a MHG and decent torque on the head and a FFIM it woulda been more succesful. In the states they are cheap to buy and a turbo mk3 in the states is about the best bang for the buck, most of the "Cheap Owners" are rednecks with NA's or kids that rice out almost stock turbo models that have been neglected for years. 1JZ owners are gonna talk smack and 7M owners do the same, Personaly niether engine can compete with a 2JZ-GTE, the 1jz can't make the power as easily as a 2jz even though they are very similar engines, and the 7M has the same problem, so before the debate even starts lets just say it is what it is and leave it there.

#2 should be "Disable clutch safety and do not push in the clutch during startup. That way you aren't loading the thrustwasher when it's dry."

thats what ithought mdc was getting at. ive heard that its bad for the motor to start the car with the clutch depressed but never knew why. now i know :)

thanks.

The 7M requires constant attention.
Most people don't understand the NEED to check the oil at least every 2 days.
I checked mine every morning before I drove it. To the point where when I parked it at night, I'd pop the hood. The gap from the hood being partially open would be my reminder to check the oil.
When I hear that the 7M is a piece of crap, I laugh. It's just like hearing a kid say "Stupid teacher failed me."

People think it's just an engine. Hell, my Subaru is like 1.5qts low right now, and it's fine. I <3 the EJ22 for reliability.

for a stock car? there isn't an advantage.

for a heavily modified car w/large lift/duration cams the advantage is not spitting shims out....

this got off topic quick, I don't think strokers would make the 7m more popular because they would end up like most other new products for the 7m that cost more than a couple hundred bucks, everyone says "OOHH, I want that and WILL buy it", then 2 people do.

There was a big writeup, i think it might've been supra centrals...

But from what i recall, a stroker kit will increase velocity, and when you hit redline you're now in the danger zone, everything still has to turn 7000 rpm's, but now the piston has more distance to travel, so it has to go faster!

So stroker kit = Bye bye reliability, or bye bye redline, your choice

This is totally crazy, I was just thinking of a stroker kit!! I have been working with a few 2jz customers and their stroker kits pushing serious power and was wondering if we could get something going for the 7m.. Are there kits out there now??

If you guys are interested I could try and get something going... ideas?

there is one company that makes a the stroker crank. Crankshaft specialist. Sold by Importperformance.net and one other company, but it can be bought directly from crankshaft specialist. One thing though, as you see here it is not a kit. The kit that importperformance.net sells is a kit but they use the crankshaft specialist crank, pauter rods and ross pistons. 97.5mm stroke when said and done. Adjuster runs one. I run one too :)

as for group buys, well you can try but I wouldn't bother. Reason is that the mkiii folk in general are cheap. They want JDM motors because they are "cheap" (ie $1000), but gasp at you when you advise them to rebuild the 7m for $1500. What they don't see, new v used.

The stroker "kit" even with the cheapest components will not cost under $2500. why? Rods are no where near stock. The pistons have to have a higher wrist pin location and that messes piston skirt at stock length. Block MUST be ground to allow for the extra stroke, Oil pump needs to be ground down where it is held by the bolt in the block. Oil pump drive shaft needs to be turned down to allow the new stroke the extra clearance.

for the 7m it won't work because not enough folks with deep pockets will to take the time to do it. My short block alone cost $4500.

You want to bring a GREAT group buy to SM?

ATI dampers for the 7m ;)

Contact me if you need any info as ATI still has the CAD/CAM designs that I had them create to make one for me.

Nah,

$1500 can get you a rebuilt short block. All within spec.

decking, hot tanking, torque plate boring and honing. anything more than 800 and they are raping you silly :)

Of course to make sure

add sonic testing, xray testing, magnafluxing, line boring of the mains and what not and i can easily see it surpassing $2000. :)

Well except for the xray testing, and including a full stock rebuilt & decked head for 1600... Oh yeah, and fully balanced everything w/ ARP hardware :D

Question = You know what would make the 7MGTE more popular?

Answer = Product placement in a PG13 movie made to appeal to young kids and ppl who dunno about imports.

For example:

Fast and Delirious..... The opening scene is burnt, hopeless, targa-top MKIII with a bad headgasket... Guys gather around and some little Smurf says.... "7M-GTE, No sheeyat!?"

By the way, when he says it, he even says "dash" instead of 7MGTE. Like "7M dash GTE."

3 months after the movie comes out... they're swappin' these engines into bad-ass cars like my Mitsubishi Galant, or 350Zs, and maybe even replacing some of the newer Hemis :slap:
