The mechanic also said that I should just go with a downpipe since the stock one is 3" anyways. I thought the ypipe was the weak point for 1jz's...is it 3" stock like he says it is??

No. Definately not. Have you considered using a different mechanic?
What diameter is it stock?

yeah, i dunno about this guy. he also wanted me to go with tokico struts and tanabe springs and use the tems as opposed to tein flex coilvers...He says that the tein flex arent electronic and are only adjustable from outside the car...

jarco are the ones who sent me to him and they say they recommend him to a lot of their customers.

I think the stock 1jz exhaust is 2". The Y-pipe is the huge restriction....

Sounds like an idiot to me. I'd use the money that you're going to give to him on a good set of tools....

I'm not positive of the diameter as I didn't measure it.
However when we swapped it out you could see a definate difference in the sizing inside the piping.
So the stock y-pipe is much more restrictive than the aftermarket one.
If I had to guess the diameter I would say somewhere in the 2"-2.25" range maybe.

Meh, my car and the clip are already at his shop. Other than not knowing much about a few aftermarket parts, I think he knows his stuff about the swap. He said he and his fellow mechanics there have done many many 1jz swaps.

I woulda done the swap myself but I'm a fulltime bio major and am about as mechanically inclined as a twinkie...

You don't need a degree to do it but I suppose you don't have the time. :)
I'd check up on him every once in while just to make sure he's doing it right.

Tell him to hold the y-pipes side by side and tell you they are the same diameter.
I would check up on him every once in a while if I wasnt 3.5 hours away from him lol. I guess he's never swapped out y-pipes for any of his customers cause he didnt seem to know much about them...

I'm guessing that you're running the stock Y-pipe since you're selling your aftermarket Y-pipe, no?

Yes, at the moment I am running tock y-pipe and down pipe. I can feel the restriction for sure higer in the rpm.
I wont have use for either one once I complete my setup with the triple k twins. So its no use wasting a brand new unit for a temporary install.

you bought that from 935? The pic thats up on his site of the ypipe looks a bit different/better:

hmm now that i look at them side by side, maybe it's the different angle of the pictures that make them look so different...
