Jim Hall is his name, Im not sure of his shops name but it is in chaska. I went to him because of a good referance (another member had Jim rebuild his motor) and when I talked to him he was vary confident, has been working on 7m's for 10+ years and said he has the best prices around. He also stated that he takes his time on his work so there is no 2-3 week turn around, more like 1-2 months. If you would like I can ask Jim if he is interested in any more jobs. PM you # and email if you want me to have him get a hold of you.

Chaska you say? I know who he is (not to many Supra guys in this state ;) ).

Have you seen any of his work or had any done by him?

I just got my head back (see my other post about mhg sealer) Top to bottom all the good stuff...$1600.

I feel you brother.

I gotta go burn the receipt so my wife doesn't find it.

Is $1600 just labor or dose that also include parts>?

Even the 180 for a resurfacing of the head surface seems a little bit high, but what do I know. :dunno:

I paid 135 for my shop to resurface/clean head and replace valve stem seals. They quoted me 135, and that is exactly what I paid.

I'd be upset if a shop quoted me and then charged me double without notifying me BEFORE doing the extra work.

^Yeah, that's BS.

I actually was "quoted" around $500 to do all that I wanted, and my bill came out to be $776 after it was all said and done. I was a little taken aback, but wasn't devastated over it, considering I had:

The block cleaned, maganfluxed & bored .030"
Crankshaft polished
Con rods resized
Bottom end fully balanced
Valve stem seals installed
Valve job
Head tanked & resurfaced
flywheel resurfaced

I put the engine together myself, which saved me a SHIT TON of money I am sure. I specifically told them to give it back to me in pieces.

My only regret is that I didn't have the engine spec'd out so I could figure out my damn compression ratio.

About $500 in parts, in addition to the parts I supplied (springs, shims, keepers etc), he got the valves, guides and the rest.

It turned out to be about $400 more than I had originally been quoted, but the guy called me to tell me. Still, what can you do at that point? You're in up to your eyebrows, and you just want to get it done and not have the guy get a resentment and fuck your stuff up.

Right on. I supplied all parts/seals just have to pay for his labor. I'm up to my eyeballs and I would like to get the head back so I can get the motor finished. On the good side The bill is $650 I forgot I already gave him 80 bucks when I picked up the lower end. All i had was hundo's when i picked it up and dropped off the head.

lol, I do the same thing.

*edit*
My last engine ended up costing me like $6-700 labor. I figure it's a good investment for me, since i would deffinitely screw up putting it together.

I come from a land down under
If he used CBN cutters and has done a good job $180 is peanuts ;)
(think of the savings over a poor job and the teardown to correct it if it doesn't seal)

Wifeless here so no one to report to!

I had Jim do my motor. It cost ~$4000 for forged pistons, MHG, rebuilt head, bottom end, and the labor to remove/install it. I got it back and there was a piston ring problem, and they never seated properly after the rebuild. So he looked at it, said it needed to be re-ringed, and offered to pull the engine, re-hone & ring it for free, and put it back together...FOR FREE!

IMHO, A great guy with great prices (slow turn around though).

Local shop here that does rebuilds and is very reputable (builds alot of race engines) has a long turnaround, I've talked to people who have had their engines there for over a year. My buddies 3.8 for his GN, once he got a workable block, was there for roughly 5-6 months. I think if the shop does quality work, and your guy sounds like he does, is well worth the wait.

I had my head cleaned, ported and polished, three angle valve job and reassembled and it cost me $250.00 and it took one week. I haven't had a problem with the head yet, and it's been about a year and a half since the work.
