hey guys,

im trying to finish up gettin my motor in, and im having a little truoble with the wiring harness for my motor matching up with the harness for the body.. my motor is an 87-88 harness, and my body is a 90, i heard there are some wiring differences and i notice them now, and im not very familiar with wiring so any help would be appreciated.. if you could direct me to a site or something that could show me how to match everything up properly that would be great, or if you know yourself...

here's some pix of the connectors that arent matching..

these 2 clips are near the battery, the grey one comes off the body harness, and the yellow one comes off the motor harness, i noticed that the pins in the clips match up perfectly (only 5 of the 6 spaces are used) but they just dont clip together, im wondering if i could just hardwire it, or if the pins are out of order

these 2 grey ones are off the body harness under the dash

and these 3 come off the motor harness and connect under the dash as well, i know the small yellow one was unused when it was hooked up in my other car

these clips wont go together and none of the pin holes match up either so im going to have to move them all around and i have no idea which one is for what.. or find grey harness clips somewhere which would be even better

search is your friend...anyways, an 87-88 harness (and some early 89 harnesses) will not work with a post 89 car. Your best bet is to find a harness from 1989-1992 with grey conectors...it will save you a major hassle. oh, and I reccomend that you don't hard wire it.

The yellow plug has more wires compared to the Grey ones.
Depending on what your options are on the car, all or some wires will be utilized.

The two grey plugs are this:
Big sqaure one = B1
Small rectangular = M1

The earlier models also had these plugs but as you see , they were yellow.

Grey M1 = 11 pin
Yellow M1 = 10 Pin

Grey B1 = 15 Pin
Yellow B1 = 21 Pin

Look at this link , the pins are mapped out for you. Disregard the 2JZ wiring information, just pay attention to the <88 and > 88 information. The plugs are mapped out section by section.

Well it seems that your going to have to dig into the TSRM wiring diagrams for both your model body harness, and the earlier engine harness.

I know I have seen posts concerning this before, do a thorough search using as many different keywords that you can think of. I know this has been done before, just not by me ^^

Good Luck

ok ill try and help with identifying the plugs first
The first plugs down near the battery look to be your c1 plugs which are for the EFI main relay.
I dont know what the 90 model harness plugs are as ive never had to use them.
The last big yellow plug is the B1 and the white plug beside it looks like the M1 plug (The jdm plugs are yellow)
The little plug thats dangling off the B1 plug i believe is to tell the ecu that the car is in park so dont just chop it off , you may need to bridge connections to start the car.
Any chance you could just try and buy a 90 model wiring harness to make life a little easier on yourself?

Honestly, it would just be easier to get the proper harness, then it would all just plug right in.

well theres only 3 of the plugs that dont match up, and someone else did send me the link that you'r refering to which tells me which pin is which on both the pre and post 89connectors- (the M1 and B1 connectors).. so im just looking for the male ends that go into them, im going to take off my yellow pre 89 connectors and replace them with the 89+ ones, instead of replacing the entire harness

If I were you, I would make sure I checked the pin outs for each harness. Just because the connectors plug in, doesn't necessarily mean that the wires in them are going to the correct contacts in the ECU. ;)

Uhm, I would say you're going to have a great time figuring this one out, wiring... is not even close to fun so good luck with making sure everything you do works correctly, if you need a harness or harness's let me know I have all the harness out of my '91 Turbo gray plug... id just do it the correct way good luck though.

well another guy i spoke with completed the exact same swap, he checked all of the pinouts and the only ones that are wrong are the 3 i have found to be off.. so i just need to change those 3 connectors over to the gray ones, and make sure i put all of the pins in the proper location when i do it

after looking over all of this wiring and the nightmare it seems to be, i think i may end up just replacing the harness altogether..

so if anyone has an 1990 wiring harness (gray clips) for a turbo, please get in touch

thanks

good decision, remember that sure youll have to buy a harness and ecu but once you sell the one youve got already the difference wont be much but the end results will be huge. :icon_biggIts always nicer to know that its all factory.

yea man for sure, it just seems like way too much to go through, id much rather safe myself the headache and do it this way instead of how i originally planned
