if you have the solid metal strip dipstick.. to read it easier you can get a small drill bit and drill holes from E to F, and when oil is at a certain level, it will fill the hole and makes it VERY easy to read.. make sure to clean it after you drill holes too.
what i did was filled my motor in one quart increments to 6 quarts, and i drilled a hole at the top of each quart, this way you can tell oil level down to the quart.

However, make sure your oil filter is primed already so the reading isn't distorted.

Negative, Ghostrider. Later model dipsticks are *MUCH* better.

actually you are both right and wrong. the 89+ was redesigned at some point because the original ones were terrible. my brother's pre89 is alot easier to read than my first dipstick but with the redesign its just as good. if i can find my old one i'll take a pic of all 3 lined up.

on my old original one I cut little grooves in to help see the levels.

edit: damn you poodles! you beat me to it!

Ok so my question is what car did the flat metal blade come on? I've seen a few people that have this and that's the kind I want. I don't want the cable with the little lead tip, I want a flat blade all the way down.

They ALL have a wire, dunno about the N/A dipstick though as it might be a straighter shot at the hole and not need the flexability.

I polished off the yellow tint on my original one, but it comes back for some reason. Guessing some reaction with the oil or the metal oxidizes like that.

Pre-89 is definately the easier to read, but it's ugly and that yellow part gets nasty...

GE's are a faily straight shot down and mine doesnt look like any of the 3 you posted. I have a flat peice of metal all the way down, but whos to say mine is factory. It could be from anything for all i know.

Ive got a 15301-42012 sitting here brand new in the package if anybody wants one.

I have the pre 89 GE dipstick, i dont know if it would be compatible with the turbo engine though because it is much shorter in length than those pictured in the previous posts

This is funny. I never even realized there was a difference, and I've had Supras from every year range. The only one that was different was my 88 N/A which was probably the easiest to read. I always hated the little chunk at the end of the wire. I like my 2JZ. It's just a typical dipstick.
