Hmm..that looks a little better than the one in my '89. Is that out of a 91-92?
No, all the late models came with the dipstick you have. As I recall, this wasn't released until well into the Mk4 era, which is why the only way to get one is from the dealer.

grimjack - i have the similar one to that, the stock 90, and i dont like it...

i'll go to the junkyard and get a pre 89 dipstick... maybe today... im bored. haha
Is it similar, or exactly the same? My original '89 was similar, and a serious PITA to read.

This dipstick is in no way difficult to read.

Oooh, my mistake.

:edit:
I noticed that part #15301 is used in the EPC for production years 86-88, and 88-93 though. Both on (8808-9305)&(8707-8808).

+1 thats the one i want! i hate my dipstick, i can read it, but its so much easier when you have the little hole that filled with oil so you know its full.

Mine is flat, but no holes... not that they're hard to add. :icon_razz

Can we please specify which year dipstick is similar the one pictured? I have the barrel shapped one with the cross hatches in it and hate it.

Thanks.

Ben

First off, sorry about poor focus but I think the point is still made.
The first pic shows the dipstick that is difficult to read especially with fresh oil.
The second pic shows the marks I scribed in the back to help indicate oil level.

I have the original 90, and I don't try to read the hash marks. I just make sure the entire paddle (flat part) is covered in oil top to bottom. Yes, that means its "overfilled". Go to the oil sticky and read why that is a good idea.

Poodles, I'm surprised you don't add extra oil.. ?

I do ;)

Already got rod knock once, don't want it again. My oil is a bit dark right now so it's easy to see even on the old 89 dipstick, so I didn't really show how they are different.

The Pre-89 is easily the easiest one to read, but it's fugly in the engine bay... Used to use that one when I changed my oil to check the level, but with the redesigned 89+ one I don't need to use it anymore...

I picked up the redesigned one a few years back- it's the best. :)

Did I mention that it also actually SEALS?

Old dipstick doesn't seal in the tube at all, the new one definately seals in there well...
