I was wondering wgich way the manifold to turbo gasket goes- the square one with the perfectly round hole in it. One side is mirror smooth, the other side has a raised lip around that round hole.
Does it matter?
Thanks.

If im not mistaken the OEM gaskets(If thats what you have), they have a tiny little
tab on them and that tab must be at the top facing the firewall.

Well- since I started this thread, I might as well explain why I was doing this replacement:
I was replacing the exhaust manifold because the original had a crack in it, and also one of my exhaust studs' helicoils was bad.
So I replaced it and the manifold. The other reason I wanted to dig into this side of the motor- A bad and mysterious oil leak, that
would spray on the downpipe, especially when the engine was under load. WELL- I replaced all of the external turbo and turbo feed/return seals,
And got it all back together. Problem is- I found that the source of the leak was actually the dipstick tube, at the base.

I've been reading on here concerning this problem and it seems to point to two possible things: pcv blockage or blow-by at the rings. So I did a little test:
I looked down at the base of the dipstick and revved the engine with one of the pcv vent hoses disconnected from a valve cover, and the oil leak stopped.
SO- tomorrow I have to track down where the pcv system is failing. Another problem(because of this) is that I have a leak at the front of the motor as well.
The main seal seems to have been pushed slightly from this issue, so I'm going to have to go in and remove everthing from the front and replace that as well.
While I'm in there- I'm going to do a compression test too- just to make sure I don't have any serious ring issues- I don't really burn any oil, so I'm hoping for good results.

Oh- another problem i have, is that the BOV will not open, period.
I didn't touch anything on the BOV or it's pressure line, so this confuses me.
Another thing to figure out tomorrow.
