Does anyone know anything about the 700R4 tranny? I talked with Shawn Cassidy and he said his adapter plate will work with this transmission as well as the turbo350. I would rather have a four speed than a three speed though if it will help with highway rpms. I've still got to see what ratio fourth is in the 700R4, but I was just curious as to your suggestions. I don't want to go with a twin disc, triple disc or any other disc. I'm going to put in either the 350 or the 700R4, but I don't know which one yet. I'm open to the pros and cons of each. I know the 350 is supposedly bullet proof, and I"ve heard the 700R isn't that great a transmission. I haven't heard from anyone that has dealt with them personally.........only hearsay. Let me know what you think. Thanks, Jay

I put this in the jz section because it's being bolted up to a jz. If it belongs in the other car section, please move it. Thanks.

I thought the turbo 400 was the one most people used on the drag supras. I am pretty sure for the MKIV's this is what they use.

The Tubo400 is the strongest of the three, but I really want fourth gear if I have that option and the 700r give me that option. I found one guaranteed to hold 650crank horsepower with a 3200stall. Now I'm wondering how I would manually shift it into fourth when our cars only have low1, low2 and drive with a push button overdrive. I don't know how that's going to work, but I can probably call Shawn and ask him unless someone else on here knows.
More than likely I will go with the th350, but if I can get the righ answers and support from my favorite people on the intranets, then I'm going with the 700r for sure. I'll probably save enough in gas with the lower rpms to make up the difference. I was told the fourth gear is .70 to 1 instead of the 1 to 1 the 350 has. That along with a 3.73 gear should do the trick.

Suprahero, PM me the price on that transmission, I got a local guy that might be able to beat it, unless you are getting it used.

What size is the converter in the 700r4, and is it included with the transmission price?

BTW, good luck man, and may this lower your times.

How do you shift the overdrive unit Justin. I'm having this done with a manual shift valve body, unless someone knows how I can hook up the linkage to my ffim. I don't know how to do that so I thought I would manually shift every gear just like I do now with my manual. I would sooooo love the overdrive though. Please elaborate.

Chris, I don't know which transmission Im getting yet. Thanks for the offer, and I'll let you know.

I just found out from Shawn that he thought my car had a 7m in it and his adapter plate won't work for the 2jz. He said he does have one adapter that will bolt up to the 2jz and then bolt up to a turbo400, so I'll have to ask him about that tomorrow.

YUP, turbo 400 is the standard for 2jz drags. That is what we always suggest for big HP.

yes but 2J mk4's running 1/4 track are pushing 1000+hp. Jay isnt there yet, though I wouldnt put it past him to try.

Jay, you wouldnt be using a stock supra shifter as its mechanical and the th350 is cable operated. Im guessing that is adaptable but have no info on people doing that. I think you are going to need to get a good ratchet shifter for the GM trans.

Overdrive units are external to the th350, like a transfer case in a way. Here is the first link I found that has a decent picture of one. http://www.drivetrain.com/new_overdrive/GM3speedautomatic/overdrivegm3spdauto.html

dont know if one would fit the supra tunnel or require mods.

As I told you Jay, the TH350 is the same trans that Paul Afontis ran in his 7 second Supra. A TH400 is a more bullet proof trans but not needed IMO. No idea about the other trans you are asking about. You can get an adapter plate for the 2J np. I will give you a call back.

The trans tunnel will need massaging for both the TH350 and 400 but less with the 350. The after market B&M ratchet shifter can also be installed nice so it looks close to factory. (from what I have seen)

FYI, and as stated, the TH350 not only robs less power than the TH400 but can be built to hold 1400 hp. A TH400 is overkill and is something that people think they need but don't.

an aftermarket shifter fitting in the console like stock would be awesome.they also have some that work with the 700r4.it would be so nice to use the stock auto shifter though.people automaticly assume that your car is slow when they see that.i think sound performance has an addapter for the stock mkIV shifter.

Who is we? Do you work on transmissions or tranny swaps? I'm going to need all the help I can get. Thanks

I know I'm going to have a manual shift valve body, so I will be making ALL of my shifts manually, but I don't know which shifter or cable I'll need. I'm hoping some people will come in here with some more answers and suggestions. I haven't read the link you posted yet Pete, but Im going to in a minute. Thanks

You should be able to get a 7m down into the 9's in an 1/8 with auto tranny........:sarcasm:

I'm leaning more towards the th350 right now. I would love to use the 700R4, but it doesn't hold very much power. I talked with a guy today that builds the 700R and that's all they build, and he said 650 crank horsepower is the most it will hold. That's probably 550rwhp and I plan on running about that or more in the near future.

here's a controller on this page for the 4L series, kinda pricey though.

I'll never make more horsepower than the th350 will handle. Shawn Cassidy tole me today that unless you're makin over one thousand horsepower, you'll never need the turbo 400. I would like the 700R if they were stronger, but maybe I can find a way to mount an overdrive or maybe someone will come up with a 3.50 gear ratio for the supras.

I'll be looking at shifters and whatever else I need, so if you find something feel free to post up a link. I'm not trying to be lazy, but it is in my nature........:biglaugh:

The 4L80E is a new trans that Sound performance is selling, Overdrive & fully automatic, AEM ems can controlled it, The 3.50 final gear ratio that your looking for Jawgear can provide you with, I know Sean has one in his MKIII....
