I hope they build it, no matter what they call it.
Then again, if Toyota really wanted to screw up the domestic market, they should make the following vehicles.
1) RWD and AWD "Avalon" sized cars. Put the 5.7V8 into it, and make the RWD car base price the same as the current Avalon. Charge no more than 3k for the AWD option.
2) Make a station wagon version of this same car, but put folding/tumble seats into it for the second and third rows, and a higher roof line. (Think shorter than a minivan, but high enough for the driveline down the center of the car.)
Would I buy one? Sure. So would every other person in this world that wants a well made, large rear or all wheel drive car. (Look how well the 300/Magnum has been selling.)
People in this country like big vehicles. They just have lousy choices due to CAFE rules. Given a free market in cars, and the gas prices to support it with less Federal taxes on gas, we would all have large cars parked in our driveways for the most part.
This is why trucks and SUV's are so popular, and why minivans are the closest alternative to a large stationwagon now. They are classes as trucks because they have a flat load floor.. LOL
Here is where you might see a Supra come back to life.
If Toyota would build a chassis like this, and mass produce it, that chassis could be shortened to GT sizes, and some swoopy areo bodywork attached.
With a sub 3000lb car, and the current 5.7V8 powering it, that would make a good Supra for the masses. (And revive the GT car for many people who don't want to spend over 35k on their sports cars.)
Look at the Mustang. Ford has sold tons of these because they are large, cheap and some versions are actually pretty fast.
Toyota has the engine, transmisison and even the platforms to do this, they just need to do it. (OK, so they would have to currently use the IS platform to make a Supra varient, but that's fine with me. Just make it so they can price it under or close to 35k with V8 power.)
