Front something around 245/45/17 maybe wider depending on if you rub or not. Rear something like a 275/40/17 you could also go wider than this. For comparison i run 245/45s on my 17x7 +35 wheels. So you could go wider in the front.

i've seen people run 315 on the rear mkiv rim. it's only 9.5"

the width isnt the problem, its the clearance with the offset. shock/springs, inner fender, control arms, etc all play a role in what will or wont fit.

i run a 18x8.5 in the front with a 245/45, in the rear i run a 18x9.5 275/35 (iirc). These are basically my max sizes or I would rub due to the offsets I am running (25+ front, 30+ rear)

to the OP 245 fronts, 275-285 rears.

edit: check out the wheel fitment thread at there is alot of info there also for tire sizes and what combos people are running. what rims are you looking at?

I have a 89T and used to have the MK4 TT wheels. I had some 315/35/17 Nitto Drag radials on them for a while and they were ok until the side wall was punctured by the strut when launching hard. I switched to 275/40/17 drag radials on the same wheels and got better results at the track and had a little bit of clearance left.

Now I have 17x10 +35 offset 5 Zigen wheels with 275/40/17 BFG Gforce tires and they hook up great and have no issues. You Could do a 285 tire or even a 315, but if you do a 315 on a 10" +35 offset rim it will stick out a bit. If your car is lowered at all I would def go with the 275, that will be the biggest you will be able to get unless you do some fender rolling and other crazy stuff.

My pics are in wheel thread.

Take a tape measure and measure the actual tread cross section, the 315 on the sidewall may be a bit exagerated. I have a 275 on a MkIV 17x9.5 rim, and my sidewalls are essentially vertical. Theoretically, you should have ~1" of bulge on both sides of the tire in order for a 315 to fit on your rim compared to my 275... and I don't think I have an inch to spare on the inside.

I'm curious as to how yours fits because I'd like to go wider with my next set of tires.

I bet the 315 looks seriously badass on there though

Look at what I posted above. It depends on what tire you get. With my nitto dr's that I had for about 3 weeks, I ordered some wheel spacer 1/4'' to put back there because of the tight clearance. But ended up blowing the drivers rear. If I had the spacers in time it would've been different, but then I would've been close to the fender and would've done a fender roll.

If you put on some regular street tires you have more of a chance to get them to fit. However 275 look mean and are enough meat for a MK3 at any power level. They fit fine and you don't have to do anything.

If you've got 315's stuffed on MKIV TT rims, chances are you don't have any more contact patch than I do with 275/40's out back. (running 255/40's on the front). Falken Azenis RT-615 tires.

Exactly. The whole point I was trying to make when I said not going past 295 on a 10" rim was because after that, you're just stretching tread over the sidewall.

It doesn't matter if you have an N/A or not if you have a 10" wheel I would put the 275's back there. The car looks so mean when you do. It's not going to matter that much from 255 to 275 and the price isn't that different either.

sorry but i disagree.the 275 is a taller tire then what come's on it stock and it will change the gearing (roll out).i did this myself and it felt like i was towing a trailer.

IIRC, a 275/40R17 is 0.32% difference in diameter, meaing your speedo would read 60.1MPH instead of 60. If you have a 45 profile, then yes, it would be a big difference in tire diameter, thus a taller tire. Otherwise, a 275/40R17 is a neglegable difference to your gearing. You may be able to measure the difference with a GPS, but I doubt it.

For the OP's rims at 17x9 and 17x10, I would recommend 255/45R17 F (1.126% too slow) and either 275/40R17 R (0.321% too fast) or 285/40R17 R (0.886% too slow). These are relative to 225/55R16 tires, which I think is stock. If you put any combo of these tires on your speedo would be within 1% at speed.

In reality, the biggest threat to making your car feel like you're towing a trailer is if you buy tires that are rediculously heavy. I'm fairly certain there's some 275 tires out there that are over 30lbs. That will make a BIG difference.

If you want to play with the numbers for tire size: http://www.1010tires.com/tiresizecalculator.asp

Tire rack is one of the few places that list tire weights.
