Take a tape measure and measure the actual tread cross section, the 315 on the sidewall may be a bit exagerated. I have a 275 on a MkIV 17x9.5 rim, and my sidewalls are essentially vertical. Theoretically, you should have ~1" of bulge on both sides of the tire in order for a 315 to fit on your rim compared to my 275... and I don't think I have an inch to spare on the inside.

I'm curious as to how yours fits because I'd like to go wider with my next set of tires.

I bet the 315 looks seriously badass on there though

Oh 315's are very nice, here are some pic's for you guys.

IIRC, a 275/40R17 is 0.32% difference in diameter, meaing your speedo would read 60.1MPH instead of 60. If you have a 45 profile, then yes, it would be a big difference in tire diameter, thus a taller tire. Otherwise, a 275/40R17 is a neglegable difference to your gearing. You may be able to measure the difference with a GPS, but I doubt it.

For the OP's rims at 17x9 and 17x10, I would recommend 255/45R17 F (1.126% too slow) and either 275/40R17 R (0.321% too fast) or 285/40R17 R (0.886% too slow). These are relative to 225/55R16 tires, which I think is stock. If you put any combo of these tires on your speedo would be within 1% at speed.

In reality, the biggest threat to making your car feel like you're towing a trailer is if you buy tires that are rediculously heavy. I'm fairly certain there's some 275 tires out there that are over 30lbs. That will make a BIG difference.

If you want to play with the numbers for tire size: http://www.1010tires.com/tiresizecalculator.asp

Tire rack is one of the few places that list tire weights.
i have a set of stock rim's with nitto extreme's and a 17" with a 275 on it.just by eye it look's like a good strong inch taller.i know it's only a small difference, but when added to the weight factor:(.
my work meister 17" with a yokohama 275/40 is 52 lbs and the stock five spoke with nitto extreme 225/50 is 37 lbs.
i know it's nit picking, but i was just stating something i believe to be fact.

i think the biggest issue is he want's a 10" wheel.even the 275 doesn't seem to fill up that size rim.i like to have my tire give me atleast some protection against curb's:)
this is my 17 x 9 with 275/40.there a perfect match size wise IMO.
