Ok... Im at a point where this decision needs to be made asap... Right now, I have six stock rods cleaned up and sitting in an empty, but clean, sheetrock mud bucket in my living room... *I own a drywall company, I have lots of these buckets, I dont mind wasting one on holding my stock rods* Anyway, should I cryo these bad boys for $50 or should I buy a set of Eagles for $500?

Plans: daily driven at about 5-600hp, looking for peak hp at around 750-800hp... Got the forged pistons already, so thats covered..

Thanks,
Jake

any weight difference w/ the eagles and the stock?

That was my first thought... if so, i would go with whichever is lighter. ( IF i had the money that is)

Well, when I talked to the guy at the cryo shop, he told me that cryo'n my stock rods would make them up to 50% stronger... And the debate over how much the stockers can hold is a varied one, but most people tend to agree that the stockers can hold 600hp, so I figure another 50% would make cryo'd rods hold about 900, so that would give me a buffer...

I dunno, I guess I'll be saving my money for Eagles... ARRRGH...

Stretch: I might own my own business, but it takes a while before you start turning a profit... Anyone who's into business knows, it can be 6 months to a year before you start seeing real gains... Im making "good" money now, but hopefully by the end of the year I'll be making "great" money... :D

I plan to make 600HP with stock uncryo'd rods. It's no biggie, the rods can take it. Has anyone you know blown a motor because of rod failure because of too much power on the stockers? Paranoid you'll be the first? the headgasket, piston, rings, turbo or bottom end will fail before the stock rods IMO.

I think this pic says it all. Maybe the owner of the engine that got bhg in the pic can chime in. I believe these are stock rods way under 600hp?:icon_razz

The fact its #5 cyl, stock rod and main bolts, etc would point to a stock as a rock bottom end, with arp bolts and a nice prep job on the bottom end it probably would not of let go!

Thats my picture of a customers engine (the way he brought it to us) when we first took it apart , and that engine was run low on oil and spun a bearing well before that rod did that. I agree that the stock rods are very strong, but he wants 6-700hp daily! That is not something I would recommend depending on stock rods for. If one was ever to fail at 600+ hp, you can throw away those nice forged pistons, the block, the head, etc... $500 is cheap insurance, get the aftermarket rods. I have shot peened stock rods and forged pistons in mine, but 500 crank hp is as far as I would feel safe pushing it.

I still have yet to see a stock one fail because of sheer power. They have been proven past 600HP, repeatedly.

If you want insurance, spend the money.

Any rod will get PWNED by rod knock, bend, twist, punch holes in the block, ect. I would just spend my money on something more usefull, like an intercooler/injectors, hardpipes, clutch, driveshaft, or dyno time.

Jake:
If you're serious about making over 500hp DAILY on a set of rods, please dont go eagle.

Go with Carillo. You'll pay more, but trust me THEY ARE WORTH IT. I have never had a carillo rod fail. Ive had two "fail", but one wrist pin broke, and the other the connecting rod bolt snapped. Not the rods fault.

Good stock x-rayed, cryoed and or shot peened rods with ARP hardware in them are good for 550-600hp, but thats it.
