What kinds of OEM head-units will fit the mkIII?

I'm looking to get a stereo for my 1986.5 supra...hopefully an aftermarket mp3-capable unit, but i'm also considering stock units from supras and other car models...

I found one stock stereo from a 1994 camry.... and i was wondering if anyone knows if it will fit, and if you guys think it would be worth getting for 20 dollars....

i think i have seen that one done.

the only problem is i'm thinking CHEAP....and i kinda doubt a relatively new scion unit made by pioneer would be cheap. then again maybe i'm wrong?

I cant really afford anything over 100 bux... 100 dollars is actually a lot for me right now. lol....

i was thinking i'd either find a cheaper aftermarket stereo or a good cd-player OEM unit...

so...anyone know about the 1994 camry stereo? i looked one up and i think they fit the 93+ supras...but i dont know about ours....

then i have another issue...i dont think i have the proper stock mounting brackets (metal things that screw into the stereo) for mounting a stereo... and i dont have any plugs...just a wiring harness (a cluster of wires, no connectors... :( )

i dont know what to do....:nono:

It wont work if it is powered by an amp unless you get the amp & wiring harness. I think all 91+ toyotas with 3-n-1 head units are. If its a single din then your chances are better.

ok well i picked up a 3-in-1 single-disk made in 1997. its model #86120-33040 and it says 56807 on the front next to the toyota logo.

as you can see there are only hookups for i believe one harness, the antenna, and power....so i think i'll need to find an amp, if all that will fit in my dash. hopefully.

here are some pics, can anyone give me some pointers on where i should start? will the mounting screws be in the same spots as the stock, or does that change from car to car?

i hope this will work...i only payed a dollar for it so i'm not too bummed if it absolutely will not...but i'm still hopefull.

ok i looked and realised that the left round hole is unidentified...i know the right one is for the antenna. and obviously, again, there is only one harness hookup so i will probably need an amp of some sort. i dont barely know how all this stuff works...i'm assuming this thing just sends a weak signal out of the speaker contacts and it MUST be amplified with any external amp? so if i went and picked up a cheap amp i could do this, maybe?

That radio you have will be a plug and play in you're car without a amp. The original brackets will bolt right up. I have a 1996 Supra radio in mine, with the stock amp and only had to change one wire around to make the antenna work as it should. Mine will play all CD's. You're original antenna will also hook right up. Enjoy.

sweet! now you said with the stock amp... do you mean one inside the stereo or stock external amp somewhere in the car...

i dont see an external amp...and i have a 1986.5 supra. i'm hoping they didnt add one down the line....

i do know that i have 14 wires (no harness clip at the end), an antenna...and something else that i'm now not sure what it is.

You're going to need a newer external amp, the harness that runs from the stock wiring to the external amp, and you're going to need to change the connectors on your stock wiring to fit the newer harness. (87+).

Your 86 had a amp built on the radio. Their is no external amp. Also what bluepearl said is wrong. You do need a amp in order for this radio to work in your 86 Supra. I have a am/fm cd cass player in my 87 supra that was from a 94 4runner and I have a external amp from the 4runner as well. You will need a external amp for this radio to work in you supra.

as for the wiring harness, all i have are these wires, do i still have to change something or can i just solder these to an existing harness meant for the stock setup i have?

I'm sorry, I should have made myself more clear. I take too much for granted. The unit I have in my car now uses a factory toyota amp, stock from the factory. The plugs were changed somewhere around 87. Mine is a 87 and I had used both types of radio's in my car, ext and int amps.

yeah that helps out a lot, thanks! is there a specific model/year of car/amp that i should get? maybe a serial number off the amp as well if its not too much trouble...it might help the search. i think i might get better results with a model number because i'm having trouble finding good results on ebay

and i'd have a stronger starting place. i figure ebay or a wrecking yard will help me out on this one.
