So im new to the toyota game. Just bought a 88 toyota supra with a 7M-GTE motor head gasket on the way out and was wondering what is the the better swap to do 1jz or 2jz? and if you got any advice for either of them.

Depends what you want basically. I like my 1jz but if i didnt spend the other 800 on something else i would have gone 2jz. 1jz revs higher stock and gets better gas milage. About the only good pro other than you dont have to bang the fire wall for the twins to fit,.

bang the firewall for the 2jz twins to fit.. Or just go single and not have to wrry.
Wiring if your not good at it or get frustrated easily i would just forget about and send it to someone that does wiring. dr tweak does it. I do some.

Is dr tweaks a person or a company cuz I no when I was doing honda swaps if I didn't like doing it I could send it to hondata and places like that.

hvyman is right saying that the 1jz is a very good decision, but we had a thread over 1j vs 2j and it was just full of hate and butt hurting, haha in hind sight really funny. If you can save that extra 800 you will have absolutely NO regret! 2j for my suggestion.
1JZ was popular when JDM engines were cheap and people didn't understand the wiring to drop a 2JZ in. Now, not so much...

If you can cough up another $1000 just go 2jzgte. It would be worth it. I had a 1j and are now going 2j. Our cars are a little to heavy for the 1j.
With stock twins and the 3.91 rear, the 1J does pretty damn well all things considered. For me, the main issue is more towards what happens with the addition of cams and a single (driveability). In regards to just all out power goals, both whp and wtq, the 1J doesn't fail to impress unless you're after larger tq figures that won't matter a ton anyhow. ( mine made 340whp and ~310wtq @ 16psi/ I've seen plenty of single setups around 450-500whp and 400-450wtq.. If that's a torqueless wonder, then I'll avoid argument altogether)

If you want torque out of a 1JZ then go VVT-I, else go 2JZ. I must admit that the 1JZ with parallel twins spooling sounds so much more sexier than the sequential 2JZ twins taking turns.
1J vvti is great for those with the tuning capabilities, especially since one can maintain a high revving motor with great mileage.
For most, a 2J is cheaper still though and easy to tune with nearly anyone. I'd like to do a vvti 2J someday despite all the negativity surrounding them in my area.

If your on a budget its hard to beat the NA-t 2j swap. You can use the same wire harness and ecu as the 7mgte, and the 2jzge is still going for under $800 in my area.
