People sure love to jump on this one. Truth is...people have been doing this for years with domestic cars. But if you say you cut your springs all the "parts queens" are gonna call you names and curse you and your car. They want to look good for the other "parts queens". Hell.. sometimes I wonder if half of them even own Supras. I also hear alot of stories around here that begin with "My mechanic said..." Mechanic? Fuck you.
Truthfully, I've tried just about every brand of springs available and they all pretty much suck (too low, too high, too soft, too hard,). I'm running koni yellow's with their springs and I've been playing around with compression and rebound rates and it's tough to find a good compromise between ride/handling.
I like the koni's, but they're a little stiff. I've thought about coilovers too but I have yet to see anyone get them really dialed in for a Mkiii. Adustability is great if you can figure out how to get it right, most don't. I would say progressively wound springs are the worst. IMHO stay away from them, they made my car feel twitchy and unpredictable.
As long as you don't cut them too much it shouldn't be a problem. As someone else mentioned the spring rate does rise comenserate with the amount of coils you cut off. Other than that I would say the only real drawback is that it will probably blow your stock shocks pretty quickly due to the increased rate and might also make it a little bouncy because of the stock shocks lack of adequate dampening for this increase in springrate.
As long as your not entering a time attack or driving crazy, ehh...who cares.
