What does your Oil Pressure Gauge read at idle?

My Oil Pressure gauge seems to read on the low side between 0-40 on idle but my dip stick shows it's full of oil???

This always seem to concern me.

For the OEM spec's it can get as low as 4 Psi but that is nothing to worrie about because these oil pumps are high flow so just because you have low Psi doesnt mean that your motor is about to go.

my idle is around 30 when warm but when its cold its about 15ish id say, ive heard the 7mgte is a low pressure high velocity oil but i dont know, i always wondered about it but thats how its been ever since i got the car running, maybe someone that knows more will have a better answer.

No... its lower when its hot

Starting it @ 25 degrees it hits 40+ after a min of warm up and 92 in Chicago it doesn't come close.

Yea, mine is almost at 0 on my oil pressure gauge. Its scary as hell, but its normal.

BTW - if youre still on the stock gauge, get a real one. The stock gauges (oil, water, boost) are all useless.

7mgte is not an oil, and the pump itself has little to do with the high flow/low pressure configuration you're all going on about.

Whats funny is that I doubt that any two people on here have posted pressures at the same oil temp, pressure and RPM without temp and viscosity are completely useless.

That being said, at idle I was at .5kg/cm2 @ 110C today.

i never seen my stock gauge pass the bar in between 40 and 80 ever lol its normally about 40 at start up and then drop alil above the middle bar thats suppose to make 20? under 40 at idle? i dunno how to read the damn gauge so its pointless even if it does function properly. But yeah the stock boost, oil press gauge is WAY off dunno bout water tho

what about your viscosity? and i dont have an oil temp gauge...

cold start, im usually around 40psi
operating temperature is between 10 and 15 psi.

note:these readings are at idle and stock gauge with 10/40w diesel oil

yea, stock boost and oil gauges definatly suck and water temp is iffy.

How about replacing the old stock gauges with new stock gauges?

Guys...pressure needs to be read with the oil at ops temp (warm motor). the TRSM has you hook up a mechanical guage where the dash oil pressure sensor is to get accurate pressure readings. You want to take pressures at idle and 3000 rpm. The oil viscosity (10W-30, 10W-40, etc) has a big impact on pressure...both cold and hot.

The stock cooler circuit has an impact on pressure too...the relief valve in the stock filter head directs flow to the cooler, then to the pan at ~40 psi. Basically it's a controlled pressure bleed.

^^^ BTW - Shimming the relief valve on the pump DOES have an effect on pressures ;)

a good effect?

Higher oil pressure is prefferable to low oil pressure (to a point, when you start blowing seals) Shimming the pump will give you a higher pressure above certain rpm's
