okay my engine is almost out of my car and I went to a shop where the mechanic is toyota certified and familiar with 7Ms. Prices were 2800 for a BONE STOCK REBUILD, not even ARPs with metal gaskets. For my Dream rebuild with forged pistons, rods, upgrade piston rings, stainless valves and ARPs with metal gaskets all around he quotes at $5000. I new it was going to be higher than I expected but DAMN! Do they seem a little high to anybody? I just want to know what I NEED in a rebuild to handle around 350-400hp without breaking anything.

holy hell...you dont need any of that to handle 350 hp

most people around here are good with stock internals and ARPs plus a MHG. Just make sure you're feeding it enough fuel to keep it all happy and that everything is in good working order, first (but that's common sense)

I know that I know better but the guy was trying to tell me if I want to boost over 10psi I have to get all that. What I'm asking is are there any parts that just having those forged would make my engine stronger. Like it was only $300 for the stainless valves and the reason I have low compression is cause of a burnt valve I just want to know which parts would make my engine stronger for 350-400HP and which parts are for racing high HP applications

$5000 for your dream build? Yeah, that sounds just right. I spent a bit over $4k and i didn't even touch the head. Although, i did buy a lot of genuine toyota bolts and parts ;)

Forged pistons are overkill for 95% of the people who buy them IMHO. Everything is in the tune...a crappy tune with JE's will blow up your motor just as quick. ARP's and MHG; shot peened rods and good tune...you'll be able to support more power than most people's wallet can afford.

Shit okay well thats why I'm trying to figure out if there is any point in getting SOME forged parts and not all. Example like forged pistons on stock rods or forged rods on stock pistons? anybody? What about the stainless valves, good idea?
Edit: Thanks for the feedback Karaki. Sorry I'm a newbie to engine work, what does shot peened rods mean? can a machine shop do that for me or is that a specific type of rods

i was under the impression most people were handling 12-14 psi on stock (good upkeep) internals.

Well WTF? Appreciate the feedback by the way. So from what I'm hearing I should just get a stock rebuild with ARPs and MG? I'm not gonna go crazy but 14 psi would be nice, I pay more attention to my sup than my girlfriend ( she punches me...alot:biglaugh: )

Those damn punching girlfriends suck. That's when you get rid of that one and find a less kinky one who won't mind you spending more time and love on your supra (and we all know here that's pretty much will happen).

Okay... that would be nice:icon_bigg. but do you think theres any point in SS valves for me? My head will be rebuilt anyway and if they prevent burnt valves more than stock that is a +

if you are just looking at 350 hp and 400 hp .....stock rods and pistons and valvetrain...will do the job with arp's and a MHG( prep the block)....should get a felpro gasket kit or some other brand... to replace all the gasket on our engine....you'll ezily get your goal ...
IMO if your going in the engine like that... u might as well... replace everything because it will break sooner or later... its 17+ years old...
if i were u dont rush thru it... do more seaching....b4 u actually do ne thing...
u want to do it right THE FIRST TIME!!!

Damn....you're like a walking piggy bank, how did you get it in there, through your ears??

Seriously though for those goals, mhg, arps, machine block and head, shot peen rods, WIDEBAND. You dont need stainless valves.

Damn Toyota techs are CRAZY!
Dealerships charge~ $85/hr, get a good machine shop, and assemble it yourself.

For your goals, stock internal and valvetrain is just fun, like everyones been saying!

Go with ARP Rod bolts and main studs for insurance, and then ARP headstuds (or bolts) and a MHG, and make sure everything is prepped to a low enough RA for the MHG you select!

$5,000 for having someone else build the engine, with forged internals, and everything prepped correctly, doesn't sound too bad at all!

Lol, I've been thinking the same thing for quite some time now. Maybe we should move to the Land Down Under and do whatever it is that Ian does to make all of that money!
