Hi, found some leaky tail lights, fixed that...but my hatch window trim needs help, as well as my side rears.

trim looks nice, but one piece at the drivers side front corner of my hatch is coming up like it isnt attached right, and i have leaks that drip through the hatch somewhere else as well. I also have a leak on my drivers side rear window when i wash my car...it spews into my back seat!

before rainy season i want to pack those suckers with sealant (as long as thats ok) and be free of moisture, and keep that stubborn trim from looking out-of-line.

SO, can i have tips on:

- getting that stupid corner trim on my hatch to stay clipped down

- what type of sealant to use. (I'm guessing either clean or black RTV silicone...generic permatex brand...but i'm not sure.

I have a black car...so considered black sealant, but clear sounds nice as well....especially if it gets somewhere visible that ISN'T black; but then there's the question...if some gets exposed, will it turn a crappy shade of yellow over time in the sun?

thanks!!:biglaugh:

Go by your neighborhood Safelite glass shop or Diamond/Triumph Glass, and buy some real glass sealant. You'll also need a primer with some of those, but they can tell you what you need in todays products. I was in the glass business 6 years ago. So, I suppose products have changed a bit. Hell if you can find one of the mobile trucks from one of these companies, maybe the guy will let you have the rest of a tube that he used on a car. Could be enough left to do your repair. And if you get a nice guy (with time) he may even give you some pointers, or offer to help after hours cheap.

FT is always right!!!

I have one thing to add though. When I repainted my car I had the back windows out and all they are held in by is 3 nuts and a bunch of black rtv silicone stuff. Windows are real easy to take out to fix. As far as your corner piece your clip is probibly brokened. I may have an extra I will look tomorrow.

They use a eurathane type sealant. Last I heard tho, the newer stuff cures in minutes, so an partially used tube may be no good. Didn't think of that as I typed the first response.

As for removing glass......rear quarter glass is a pretty easy pull, but you need patience. I've pulled a bunch on my parts cars. Just be real careful pulling the moldings. Pulling a windshield in our cars without breaking it is near impossible. It can be done, but not probable.

What I use is Dow Corning 732 RTV Black, this is the highest quality Silicone you can buy, If it will be exposed to any sunlight you must use the Black otherwise the sun will cause the clear to break down quicker. I use it to seal the rubber or trim to the body to keep any water from running inside any cracks or gaps in the seals or trim. Get yourself a nice maybe 3/4 ID syringe hold the syringe straight up and squeeze some silicone up into it. Now use the tip and your thumb to apply a thin seal anywhere you need. After your get an nice sealed line use some Spit on your finger and wipe it to a smooth seal using paper towels to wipe the silicone that does stick to your finger. Spit for some chemical reason keeps the silicone from sticking to your finger as you wipe it to a smooth finish. Wiping it also presses it down into and onto the sides of what you want sealed. Practice on something first to get the hang of applying it and wiping it smooth. Then have it and you'll be sealed for many years.
