Improper size or installation could cause one to blow for sure. I keep forgetting that - it's a rare thing up here, virtually every machine shop that I've tried in Canada keeps both Metric and Imperial plugs in stock, and every shop can get oddball sizes in minutes from their parts wholesalers up here. :)

I would say lack of maintance, they are all corroded from the inside out. Most likely the radiator and heater core are just about shot if they have not been replace already , headgasket is most likley ate up and ready to blow, check water pump also. Thats what happens when you don't flush every other year and 50/50 mix.
Unless of corse it was just rebuilt and they installed the wrong plugs thats highly unlikley though. yeah I know later responder

So those recessed circles are freeze plugs...why are they all random like that, and are they only in the block or located on the head also

I would put a up close pic with one gone.. but I'm in santa rosa at the moment. when I get back I'll get a close up of one when it comes out. I guess the old owner didn't maintain the engine at all. the amount of rust gunk water that came out when I pulled the water pump was just sick.

Bump for question...are they in the head also or just block?

Lucky for me, There was no freeze plug blown. It was just a BHG. The guy was a moron. It started, idled, and revved fine. So im replacing it as we speak, but those pics will still be cool for future reference.

Those plugs are casting plugs. You will NEVER have a block freeze and those plugs save the day. Never, ever. Those are there to remove the sand that the block is cast with.

Doorman plugs are just a hair too small. That's why they pop out. I've changed doorman plugs on one car to the toyota plugs. The smaller casting plugs from doorman are fine, but not the large one. There are 2 sizes for the 7m.

Let me see if i got this right...they are holes in the block that are only there because some type of rods where there holding the block as its casted.

So why exactly are they called freeze plugs if burning hot coolant touches them

Does anyone have pics of where they are located so I can check them out when buying
