Weird Sound under acceleration

so i added 1 quart of gear oil and the lsd additive. i took it for a slow test drive and the noise was still there but sounded a lot less audible and i didnt feel it as much as before, so there was an improvement. i dont know how much was in there, thats why i only added 1 quart. tsrm says the diff takes 2.6 quarts, so im thinkin im still low. i didnt drain it, cuz i didnt wanna loosen the shit thats probably holding the diff together right now because to my knowledge, it has never been drained before. im gonna go buy another 2 quarts tommorrow and pray to God i'm not fucked.
Well...not my 1st choice on oil, but should work. You def want to get the oil level up to the fill hole though. If you're getting clatter, add more of the additive.

hmmm, couldn't say for sure. A friend of mine had a rear wheel bearing go out on his '67 Mustang that sounded similar but I suppose if the diff got messed up it would probably sound close to the same.

That does sound like the diff is going out *I think* but its hard to tell. Even if it is, they're not that hard to change out. A friend with a shop and lift would help though
yeah..i pretty much came to the conclusion that i gotta swap it..the problem is i gotta find someone locally to sell me a diff cuz shipping would suck. finding a shop to install it at is the easier part.
^ Do it yourself! My Fiance (who knows zip about cars) and I had the whole rear subframe dropped in about an hour, taking our sweet time and the whole "what's this" deal. I think dropping the whole thing was easier than just dropping the rear end...
This will also give you a great opportunity to change your fuel filter... which turned out to be a PITA in and of itself for me. lol

Yea I think you can do it yourself with basic tools, its not hard. If you just plain dont want to mess with it, thats another matter. I think the job requires more strength/force than it is actually difficult.
so i found this diff on a salvage yard website. the problem is that its for a GE. would this be a problem..what do i look for?
Any diff would work but having an lsd would be nice. Some na's came with lsd's and some didnt iirc. Keep in mind that anything from an NA should be a 4.10 or 4.30 which i dont like personally because the cruising revs are that much higher at any given point compared to turbo rear ends (3.73 and 3.91)
Find a diff from the same year and specs as your car (Turbo, LSD, 5-Spd)...otherwise it will drive differently, and you may not like it...lol.
There's always the option of having yours rebuilt if you can't find another one locally...IIRC Aaron @ driftmotion rebuilt one for about $145 in parts.

Your car is an 87 88 so you need an LSD with a gear ration of 3.91 to keep in specs.
