What Would Supramania Do?

I've got an '88 Targa and I am wanting to go turbo but I am having a hard time deciding what to do? This is my DD so what ever I end up doing, it needs to be off the road as little as possible. These are the 3 options I would like all of your opinions on.

1. Swapping in a 7mgte, since that seems to be the most simple and cost effective solution (from what I have read) for my turbo "needs".

2. Going NA-T for a an individual and unique supra in my are ( I believe )

3. Staying with the 7mge and just enjoy the car for what it is.

Now I do not have the income at the moment to do any of these right now but I was just wondering what you guys would do if you were in my shoes.

Stay with the 7MGE. In bold is why I think you should.

so for doing the swap, should I start purchasing the necessary parts when the funds permit me to, just so I can have them on hand for when I am ready?

Yep, you can start with the small stuff and work your way up. You best bet would be to find a beater donor car, get the motor rebuilt, and then swap all the turbo parts onto your na.

1st how long have you had the car?
if you haven't owned it for more than 2 years, Dont touch the 7mge, keep it in there, learn the car. Understand the engine. Doing a swap for first timers is not like changing the oil. You will be frustrated, annoyed and it will take you a while.

SO Learn the car, bring it back to stock before you want to go turbo or do any real mods to it.

The worst thing you can do in this car is jump head first into a project thinking it will be "Cost effective" and "quick".

I have an 86.5 NA... got tired of it because my brother had a turbo 87... so i wanted a turbo. fast forward 8months later... i buy a 90 turbo supra for $700 and am currently rebuilding it with forged internals, i think i have almost $4000 into the car INCLUDING the purchase price...

If i were to do it all over again, i would go 1jz... no questions asked.
7m can be made reliable, but the jz has that reputation for reliable, fast, and maybe not so cheap...

but i would just save up for now and get a LARGE sum of money together and just get the whole 7mgte.

if your engine was rebuilt, and hopefully properly done, and you only have 20k on it... i would just save up for now and then once it goes pop i would swap in a 7mgte...

i mean if they did the rebuild correctly, that car should last to at least 100K+
i see most turbos tend to rod knock around 150K~

Well if car is like really nice... MY personal opinun is to keep it stock and DD with reg maintance..
and i would save up for a bone stock single T 2J swap...to rebuild a 7m gte the right way as stated on here many times.. its hella lot cheaper to just get a 2J to start with..

Agreed, "most" :) 215K original miles here. ;)

Save up for a 7MGTE Swap. Little by little put coins and dollars in a jar. Count it every 6 months or so and next thing you know it you may be able to just buy a turbo car instead of swapping.

OK, I LOVE my 7M...but if I could do it all over again, I'd bite the bullet and go 2J and be done with it...

You need a car that's reliable right now, leave it the way it is as you can't afford the upgrades or to have it down...

Leave it like it is. Seriously, just clean it up, work on suspension/brakes - if the engine ever goes, you've got a SOLID platform to pop a motor into ;)

^Agreed^

As for the motor to swap in that would be a new thread all together. I would say between

1)JDM 7MGTE
2)Built 7MGTE
3)JDM 1JZGTE
4)JDM 2JZGTE
5)1.5JZGTE(2JZGTE head on 1JZ block)
6)Seriously built 2JZGTE(Stroke to at least 3.3 if not 3.4)

Personally, if money would not be an issue, the last one would be my choice. Stroked out to have the lower end grunt of a 7M with the solidness of the 2JZ block and head.
