Videos of good running Supras

Wow, I was getting concerned reading that! At "recently it got louder and louder" my heart rate actually increased slightly! I think GTEs may tick more because there's more places for exhaust leaks (which is actually probably very common) and in general GTEs are beat on a lot more than N/As. I'm really thinking I should check all my exhaust-related bolts now...

JDMMA70: Man your car idles good! Are you running two BOV's?

Thanks alot Kenny, she does idle smooth, despite the annoying ticking (diesel truck valves) :biglaugh:

yes both have vacuum going to it. Although i think my stock one stopped working sometime ago, (guess 10psi was to much for it) just havent gotten around to getting a working one, but my GReddy usually handles most of it anyways.

 I hear it I hear it! JDM, how long have you driven around with that noise? If you haven't had any issues because of it for a long time I might just be ok :) I left my stock BOV when I put the SSQV on mine too, I should probably take it out... the ricers love it though. "You have TWO BOVs?!?!?!" :aigo:

Well this head went on the car back at the end of July (it supposedly had the clearances checked :nono:) So its been since August to Now ive been driving the car like this, havent gotten around to pulling the valve covers to check the clearances.

Leave it lol when my stock one was working it sounded cool.

not sure if anyone asked you this yet or not, but does the noise increase or get faster when you rev it up? usualy rod knock will get louder or faster with a rev.

I'm feeling much better about it now :) The sound actually pretty much disappears when revving, I can hear the lighter ticks of the valves if I really listen but the deeper tapping is gone. I've reshimmed my valves 3 times but the last time was after some head work so maybe after running it they got a bit looser..? I thought they got tighter with some running but who knows...

Ive got a very loud tick due to valve clearances. Its annoyingly loud.

THAT'S IT! that's my car! Almost as loud, very close. So perhaps the variations we have are related to how the topside of the engine was rebuilt. My car also has a very annoying miss. You will hear it about once every 40-60 seconds. I'm thinking about changing out the spark plugs, going back to stock. It has iridiums in it now. The wires have already been changed out to NGK blues.

When I get my car back, I may do a video of the engine too, see if someone can help me find that ()#*$! miss that I keep hearing!

FYI: my engine was rebuilt ~50k miles ago.

The little miss at idle? Just like a little "poonk?" Mine does it too when I've been driving it a while and let it idle for a good bit. It only does it once in a blue moon but I'm always wondering about it... I have new MSD wires and new plugs now, along with a rebuilt engine and it still does it!

An intermittent "spit" sound when it's "hot" especially??? I suspect a "sticky" valve in an inner cylinder... perhaps?

Just my suspicion... but I had it as well... for YEARS, then it got more "pronounced"... then a little louder... and on a hot run through the gears followed by a throttle-off decel down from buck-twenty or so... and the valvetrain got NOISY and when I went back ON throttle at around 40mph... it was WRONG! Later checked compression, and NONE (0 - ZERO) on #3... but motor had turned over, fired, and ran "fine" accept VALVE racket up top just after the incident when I checked all injector leads and plugs and fired it ONCE again... so I suspect a stuck valve... but haven't pulled the head OFF yet... almost there.

G/L!

my car does that too, i dont notice it much anymore since ive drowned it out. Before my head swap it did it as well, changed plugs went to NGK wires still does it, you can see the motor shake from it slightly when it happens. It annoys me so much wish i knew what was wrong with it so i can fix it. I replaced every single vacuum hose, gaskets. I even have perfect vacuum at idle its so wierd. its really noticiable after a hard run of the engine.

^Yeah, mine shakes a tiny bit when it happens too. I think crisp may be onto something with the valves sticking, that would explain both the noise and the misfire. I still have my original valves and guides, I only replaced the seals, springs, and retainers. They all seal great but I never did check to see how smoothly they moved in and out :(

I think we should change the thread title to "the weird noises Supras make" :D

A "poonk"? More like a moment's hesitation and then the idle resumes. You will see the tach needle move ever-so-slightly. It does it once its warmed up.

Well, its good to know I am not alone ;) But neither of my 87's or my 91t had the miss. Or the tapping.

If I had the car I would do a video of it running. But, no, someone with bad judgment at an intersection got it t-boned so its in the shop. Damn those woman drivers! :sarcasm:

So there IS something wrong.... if Supras exist without the tapping or misfire (poonk is what it sounds like to me, hard to find a spelling for the noise!) it can't be normal. :(

Mine did NOT do it on my "original" head... and ran/idled PURRRRFECTLY with VERY LITTLE valvetrain noise. That was from about 22k miles (when I got it) for the next 30-40k miles... no issue. Then I had a crack on ex-side, and had to swap with reman fresh head (complete). Had a small "miss/spit" for years, until it finally "seized" the valve. (Pretty sure.)

That's one reason I'm a little hesitant to call NOISES - NORMAL. NOT ALWAYS!

ill try to get a video but its hard to capture on video. the tapping noise should be minimal if the valve clearances are within spec. Mine arent thats why its so loud. Two other guys who had their heads done at the same place had the same problem clearances were WAAAY off. I just havent gotten around to checking it.
