LOL....

Do I need a valve spring compressor to take out my valves guys? Or should i just undo the little retainer clip ( c clip ) on top and out they come?

I bought a valve spring compressor for I dont know what reason now...there is no space to even compress the valve spring.....needless to say I dont think there is that much tension on the springs at all....am I right guys?

LOL...help. Me feel very stupid.:nono:

I come from a land down under
Jon: Grab a piece of rag a plug socket and an extension bar

Put the Rag over the Valve collet/lock then the Plug Socket making sure the rag is a little loose under there then give it a light hit with a hammer and hey presto it all comes apart and the rag stops you losing the locks!

Collet/Socket????

I think you have a different language for car parts over there IJ...

Are you talking about popping off the little bitty 'C' clip on top ( the collet/lock?)??

I can see its about the ONLY thing holding the retainer on the valve/spring assymbly...

Collets/Locks are the little things you're talking about there are 2 to each valve.

Socket is the tool you use to pull the plugs and just happens to be the right size for this job.

are you talking about a LITERAL socket:

and having the rag under it to keep all the stuff from flying apart?

or a SOCKET:

I am feeling a bit retarded right now....

Oh so a SPARK PLUG socket!!!!

and there are TWO 'C' clip ( collets) per valve? One on top of another I presume?

So I just HIT the socket ( that is OVER the rag that is on top of the valve assymbly) and the collet locks just POP right off???

Once you've done 3>4 you'll get a feel for how hard to hit and blaze through the rest!

Valver retainer>rag>plug socket>short extension bar so you don't hit your fingers> hammer

The locks are a circle cut in half.

the one i finally found and used before I just saw IJ's post, had a "U" cut out of the side of the tool that fit into a standard spring compressor?. how do you reassemble them ian? for future references..

I just did this one the head I'm sending to the machine shop, I used a 19mm socket and an extension. Set it ontop of the valve spring and give it a hit with the hammer and they pop right out :)

whoo... ouch my brain...

yeah... anyone got a link to a decent compressor?
I used the same technique as Ian and Loki.
One good tap, and they were out.

we should've made a video of when we tore down my friend's 4G63 head. It broke an intake and exhaust valve on piston #2 I think, anyway, munched the whole CC and annihilated the spark plug to the point where it wont come out.
We were acting like we didn't know how to get the springs out, hitting the retainers with ratchets, prying on them with screwdrivers.. throwing sockets at it... then I got my hammer and just started pounding the valves... taking a socket and placing it on the valve, then letting go and swinging at it hard and missing, sending the hammer down into the head elsewhere, causing damage.... We had a good laugh with that...

JJ: ROFLMAO! BZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzpoof!

Yeah I was going to throw in Keepers/Collets/Locks/Split Locks but figured I'd just confuse the issue more than I had already ;)
