Hi,

Im planning to swap out my current 7MGTE out of my '88 Supra Turbo w/ a JDM 7MGTE. I have some questions though will my ECU work with the JDM Engine harness. What will have to be changed. I searched but did not manage to dig any info up on this subject.

Pretty much my question is

88 Turbo Automatic ECU
JDM Engine and (Harness im guessing)

Im currently at school so ill add more to this post later.

Does Jarco still supply JDM 7MGTE's? Any other reliable places to get a
JDM 7MGTE from?

Thanks

JDM 7mgte's are pretty iffy.. I would do a teardown and rebuild of each one. I would rebuild your curent 7mgte, assuming you didnt send a rod through the block or something.

and yes, the ECU will match up with the harness. It is only specific to tranny (M/t, A/t).

As for reliable places to get a JDM 7mgte, I would say here. Supramania is your best bet :p

I think the throttle linkages are different too, or the throttle bodies. I can't remember. I have had my jdm gte for about 4 years now with no troubles.

not exactly- the harnesses are different, depending on what year the car was built;)

as in, an '87-88 engine harness won't fit a '90;)

You should just rebuild the engine, my jdm just took a crap on me (rings are gone, valve stems out the window and its overheating. 99.9 percent of the member will agree withme about just rebuilding the engine. This way u know what u have in it and its about the same price. If u can do it yourself it, you can save some cash. On a stock rebuilt engine all oem parts plus a mhg and some arps, you can safely push close to 500 rwhp. Good luck with your decision this is just my 2 cents :naughty:

I dont know about the gte but a friend of mine just swaped in a jdm 7mge from a cressida into his blown-up NA supra. the only differences he noted was no egr system and a different oil pan.
I would never just drop a motor in without replacing all the seals gaskets and the oil pump. :nono:

Take it from me, everyone told me to just do a rebuild, but i didnt listen and went with the JDM motor. You know how they say it has 30-45K miles on it (or something like that) Its bullshit! A week after i had it installed(which i should have done it myself), the HG blew. Not to mention 2 clogged injectors, a bad coil pack, and i dont even remember what else. It turned out that it would have been cheaper to just do the rebuild. It allows you to know what the engine has been through, so when you want to throw power at it, you dont have to worry about blowing it up. Trust me, go for the rebuild. Walk if you have no other car, and it will be worth it in the end.

I was just like this guy! I was going from NA to turbo so I couldnt rebuild my motor and when I bought the JDM 7MGTE, everyone said to rebuild it but I couldnt resist wanting the power so I put the motor in. I drove for about 2 months and was so disappointed in the power that I decided to use it for my build. After the build, I was satisfied, I got to actually feel what a new 7MGTE was supposed to feel like.

So if you have the GTE motor already I definitely vote for a rebuild!

If I just want to put the motor back to stock oem form. What's a good brand for pistons, rings, connecting rods, etc. Can I get the motor rebuilt with all the parts under $1,800? Plus I live in an Apartment, if probably have to find a fellow supramania member to help me with the rebuild as this will be the first motor I rebuild. So all the help I can get will be nice.

Also if I do decide to go the jdm route. I will be replacing the hg, injectors, oil pump, fuel pump, and water pump. Also adding a Lex AFM. So im hoping the motor will hold up.
Thanks!

Whats wrong with the motor in the car now? BHG or something? It would be more cost effetive to build the motor you have rather than buy another motor and build that one. Yea apartments don't look to kindly on people doing basic mantinence on the lot I would love to see what they would say if you had a 7m hangin' from a cherry picker! LOL:rofl:

edit: whats your power goal?

My goal is 390-420hp.

The motor I have now when I bought the car it had a small collant leak, turned out to be a hose at the back of the head. Valve stem seals are bad, then it started blowing white smoke. I thought bhg but I have no symptoms. So I guessed turbo seals. Not only that the car came with a GReddy TD06H-20G turbo with no other mods except a HKS filter. It take a while to start up on cold days. After that it starts fine, and it has a slight miss.

Eeeww.... that hose is a PITA to get to. Stock internals will hold that power but the stock Hg and head bolt torque won't. Leaky valve seals are normal on 100k+ cars. If you suspect BHG but don't show all the signs do a compression test to be sure.

I got my JDM motor from www.tigerjapanese.com and it was in very good shape. Also runs very good as has done so for 5xxx miles so far. I also replaced every gasket (except headgasket) and torqued the headbolts down to 72ft/lbs before i installed it. Everything will match up to your USDM harness. Differences in the motors is the throttlebody and the throttle linkage, no egr, no bvsv. My JDM swap was a 89+ so i had to switch the mounts from my old motor, because my 89 apparnetly has the earlier style mounts.

Ill take that advice, but that's the main reason why Im considering a second engine however if my current one can be saved, I may stick with it. According to previous owner the engine was rebuilt 3 years prior to me purchasing it. Prior to that it had sat in the garage for a whole year. It has a little under 105K miles on the odometer. But I know I can't do a metal headgasket without lapping the block, and I don't have the space to be removing the engine eaither. If I could get away with just have the head machined id probably do that. But then I have to worry about the automatic transmission.

Yes MHG takes lots of prep work. My rebuild took 3 months because I could only work on it for 1-2 hours a night and lots of time waiting for parts to come in or parts to come back from another shop. It sucked..

If you can't do it yourself it will not be cheap. However swaping a motor is not any easier. It will not just "drop in" in a day. Unless you have done it before that is...:biglaugh:

Man, so many bad experiences with JDM engines. Mine has run great, and has yet give me a problem. It was compression tested before being shipped, and came with a one year, unlimited mileage warranty. For only $845. Sorry to hear you guys all had bad luck.
