I have searched the forums but I may have the incorrect name for this part. Its the hose that comes from under the oil filler cap (where you put the oil into the engine) and snakes behind the altenator to go back into the block above the oil pan. Mine is leaking at the bottom and I want to replace it, but looking at its design I need to know a couple things.

1. What is its purpose?

2. Can it be done differently? This kinda looks like its a "wedged in" design and not done with a lot of thought. Mine presses against the back of the altenator (I don't like parts pressed against each other.. lol) and just seems that if I could elbow it from under the cap and run it direct to where it attaches to the block it would be more effective and not be pressed up where it is.

What the heck is it referred to as? lol.. I know I saw this in the TSRM once but I cant find it again. It shows the valve covers... (cam covers to some) but not the hose.

It's called a 'ventilation hose', part number 12263-42010, should be able to get it for about $25 from Champion Toyota or Vancouver Toyota, whichever is closer to you.

You can do it differently if you like, as long as it's an easy gravity fed flow back to the bottom mount, you're good.

Yep, it's a dual role of being the vent for the crank case, and with high oil flow to the head to be a drain back to the pan.

Thats weird.. why would the hose leak then... I dont see any cracks and it doesnt seem like a pressure line.. (mind you it is a larger hose. I think I will see if I can find a different hose form for it and use that instead, because I think it has about 8" more than what it actually needs. Failing that, I will just pop an elbow on and just straight down to the block.

Now I have to look really close and just see if maybe the hose isn't leaking but is being used as a path by another leak. Still gonna replace it though.

I'm surprised for how cheap it really is, that people are either using a cracked one, or using a cheesy replacement from autozone that doesn't fit right.

Well, every replacable hose on my engine is going to be replaced (then I know all of their ages) and hopefully every one will be upgraded as well. I have been trying to track each one down and understand its function and see if it can be routed better and have a better hose used. For a lot of it, I think one of the hose kits that some people here have used are just what the doctor ordered.

I think the most difficult thing is (in planning to do it right) I am starting to get forced into doing "mount-up" rebuild just for the reason that although the motor was rebuilt 24,000 km ago, the outside parts (turbo was apparently replaced then as well) are all 20 years old. For the picture I have in my mind of a reliable engine, I dont know if I will have a choice. So.. at that point... I may actually just go ahead and up the whole thing. Engine, steering, suspension, transmission...

The problem is... this engine is not a 1980 Celica engine.. lol. It just looks likes its gonna be a bear to pull.. and I dont see how I am going to get around that. (its fine as is.. for now.. but I can see the "failures" approaching)

Just a note (for anyone who reads) I have only had this car for 1-2 months.. the previous owner did the rebuild. Im just not sure what was done correctly.

oem part imho, seen a few that are autozone specials (like mentioned) that kink in a heart beat. Local guy had a huge ass spring on his that kept sliding up and down the hose, where ever the spring was NOT, it was kinked shut.

careful of your wiring harness connectors, they like to fray off easily when your not paying attention with a socket or something ;)

Well, im buying up all the parts because winter is coming. Going to do everything I can in one shot (less work that way), so the top of the engine will be torn down anyway, so I will be fairly careful of all the wires, etc. (gonna be doing lots of pics cause I suffer from very poor short term memory.

I think the worst thing about planning to upgrade your vehicle is reading these forums where so many have done such a superb job with their vehicles. I immediately want to go their route, then do the math, calculate the time and effort and then end up back where I am... lol. But man.. I would love to tear this engine and tranny down and go with 450+ hp...
(no 1100HP for me.. I'd kill myself, not that disciplined.. :) )
