Are shifts for the first 2 gears very abrupt? I wonder if they are straight cut gears? They will feel alot worse then they are and be very jerky.

On the other hand, do you have a waranty? If you are unsatisfied with the work they did, take it back.

I have the same problem... mine started 4 months ago... I ignored it, than just recently my clutch starts slipping when accelerating. Being that my car has 196,xxx miles. Its maybe time to change clutch and possible tranny rebuild.

So if you have a high mileage car, maybe consider replacing clutch kit, flywheel and gear fluid. Also, if you do consider it, while you're underneath the car replace LSD oil.

That's just my experience, another thing during the 4 months, I was practicing in parking lots burning out and drifting so it was my fault f'ing up my sh!t. So right now, my supra is down.

i have this same problem, but i think its in my clutch or flywheel , it started about three days ago ironically, and its an almost new clutch, with a factory flywheel, so idk but it really gets loud at takeoff and then idk it just kinda blends in with the road noise and i cant hear it if it actually is still there, but i havent changed my gear oil before so that may be the issue, idk, but any input would be welcomed

If your clutch is glazed for any reason it will make terrible noises like that. Just gotta be extra sure there isno oil of any sort on you presure plate, flywheel and clutch disc. That included oil from human skin. It will make a big difference. Lots of times the materials used on cheap or super high performance clutches will be way more affected by oils than an OE style.

Giter if it's related to your new clutch install you should go through a checklist and make sure you missed nothing, didn't skip a step or anything. Was the flywheel machined? If so the machine shop balance it?

To the OP it sounded like the pilot bearing....but, if it's only in 1st and second I would guess not. Maybe the 1-2 syncrho is worn somewhere and creating a harmonic when selected for either gear.

I really cant think of anything else right now, I might be missing or forgetting something.

sthmstr is also right though, any kind of oil or fluid can not only cause noises but can destroy a brand new clutch. There can be chattering and hot spots, uneven wear, slipping etc.

When you say press out the clutch and it stops, does it still whine with the car in gear until you move to neutral or does it stop whining even in gear?

mine does not whine unless the motor us at anything above idle, no matter if in gear or not, i dont believe it has to do with my clutch replacement, because that was quite a few months ago and it just recently started to whine

Any gear whine I have ever heard, just sounds like a subtly whirling of metal. I would say that if it sounds more than that there's likely something wrong. Also most times you will ever hear it is when you are cruising at high speeds. If you can hear it noticably louder above your exhaust noise on acceleration then you really have a problem(especially if you have an upgraded exhaust).

Rather than start a new thread I'll chime in on this one..... I have a very recent rebuild of a 7mgte with an r154, the tranny sat up for about 5 years while my life happened and then we got on with the build.

Anyway when put back together by a Toyota dealership 1st and second whined a little bit and reverse was pretty bad too for the first 100 miles or so..... then all gears but 4th whined like hell, all signs point to at least the input shaft bearing gone, and a maybe few synchros. I put lucas oil in the tranny along with whatever toyota had in it (i know i'll get yelled at for this, but it seems to work on most tranny's) and it took the whole bottle (quart) almost..... it still whines like hell. I was thinking of draining and putting in redline MT90 but i think its futile as she sounds really bad.

I am trying to decide how to move forward, AAMCO has quoted 1300-1700 to freshen it up..... or I could take my chances on a used tranny.... 500-800 and replace it myself.....

I have not looked into a rebuild kit, anyone done this?

advice, insight, sympathy? I'll take what I can get, as my supra keeps pumping me dry :(

i thought marlin crawler rebuilt them for $900 or so? aamco will charge double for parts, keep that in mind.

duly noted. It was more or a less just a base line starting point for me....

I think 900 is a little low for MC for a true full rebuild (maybe im wrong), and if i sent it to them id want nothing less.

I have my eyes on a used one with 120k that would cost me around 500 between tranny and shipping.... but i might just be facing the same issue in the near future with it...

:( sigh.......

4th gear is locking the input and output shaft together, that's why it won't whine.

Marlin Crawler is more expensive than that (depends on how bad the tranny is as well), but well worth it...

i cant find any price/part list for a full rebuild from them. I guess the price i got from word of mouth was based on a relatively decent rebuild using most of the original parts.

Ill shoot them an email and see what they will give me...

yup, yup. Alright, I think I am going to try and get by with a used one for a while keep the beat one in it now and send it off to MC later on in the year for a full rebuild.

I am not sure what that is yet. When you push in the pedal, the clutch is being disengaged. When you let the pedal out, you engage the clutch.
I am not sure you how you "press out" a clutch. I think you mean disengage, but then again, maybe you mean the pedal.

This matters for diagnostic. Your input bearing could be dying. I think that is where poodles is going also.

From the research I have done you can get all the aprts you need on 1 page from driftmotion.com

Full rebuild kit is $239.00

The 2 upgrades Marlin crawler offers are a Bearing Retainer and a 1st gear Thrust Washer. They are $50.00 and $80.00. That being said, id you have the know how and the Toyota service manual you can so it yourself. That's my plans anyway. Or Have a shop do it. I would steer away from AAMCO though. They are the Jiffy Lube of the transmission worlds, and likely to mess something up for you bad. At minimal extra charge, of course. :)
