If you push the clutch pedal down and the noise goes away, but comes back when you release the pedal, I'd look at the throw out bearing first. If you're gonna go that far, might check the bearings as mentioned, and the thrust washers as well.
Honestly, I'd check the fluid level in the trans. before I did anything else. You could drain it into a clean pan, and check it for metal. A little dust would be acceptable, but if it looks like metal flake paint, I'd be concerned. I've also noticed that using Royal Purple 75-90, my w-58 does have a bit of whine, where as with Mobil 1 or standard Castrol of the same weight, it doesn't.
