So some cold weather is coming into my part of the world so I thought it would be a good idea to freshen up the coolant in the supra. $31 later I was the proud new owner of a jug of toyota coolant. Much to my luck I look out the window and noticed that my $31 was dripping out of the drain plug on my radiator and flowing down the road. Shit, I pinched the rubber gasket and ripped it.

My question is......

Am I out another $31 for a new jug of toyota red or is there another brand of antifreeze that is comparable to it?

Ouch, $31.. I paid under $25 at Metro Toyota here on the Island.

Probably for the best that you get more of the red stuff, always good to have some around with these cars haha.

Ya where is everyone getting this stuff so cheap? The cheapest I have found was $27 in the next town but its not worth the money in fuel to compensate for any sort of savings. So nobody knows of anything comparable?

You need to remember that most the people that are in here posting what they paid are in the US. Toyota parts are much cheaper down there and you are forgetting the 30% exchange rate.

I have run all kinds of coolant and not one has out performed the other. The big thing is do not mix the red with green and do not run straight water.

I come from a land down under
This debate has gone on for ages that the Green is the same as Toyota Red just with a different dye, this is my own personal experience with it.

I bought a brand new Block and Head built the motor up and ran it with Green, 4000 Km's later I broke something and pulled the head, I was STUNNED to see pitting and errosion on the Block deck surface where the kidney shape hole are in the gasket.

Started using Toyota Red no more pitting and the engine has done a LOT of Km's.

YMMV but this is my experience, if it's erroding the deck it's doing the same to the water jacket.

How about this, when i did my Water pump I picked up some green because Toyota was closed, it was a Sunday and I needed the car for the week. Couple thousand km later my heater core started pissing. :icon_mad: Could have just been a coincidence but.. strange.

oh and make sure you flush the block GOOD before swapping back to red.

Well ever since I drained the coolant system for swapping in my new koyo rad and 2j waterpump I have only ran red or water so I'm not too worried about draining it completely again but it sounds like the toyota red will be going back in at $assrape per gallon lol.

Just off hand does anyone know where I can find a replacement drain plug gasket for my koyo rad or is it just a generic one?? I'll know once I pull it out but thats not happening for a few days so if I can have one picked up prior that would make things go alot smoother for me. That or I might just install a fricken drain tap. Has anyone ever gone that route before?

My NA with green had some bad pitting in the aluminum head around the coolant passages, i thought the head was junk but i was able to use it and it sealed. Switched to red though i don't trust my expensive engine parts on a cheap coolant. You really dont need to buy it that often anyways, so might as well get the right stuff.

There are a few types of coolant out there, I'm sure there is something near identical to red for much less. That being said nothing but red here, lost my first head because of green. To date I have never actually seen anything giving the specs on toyota red though? Somebody has to know? paging Jeff Lange:icon_bigg
